I want to work in property - but how?

I graduated with a first and have since done postgraduate studies. I'm in my mid-twenties and successfully work for myself at the moment, but I want to get into property.

I'm worried employers are going to think my qualifications aren't relevant. But I can definitely sell and have a passion for flats in particular. I'd be willing to start out at the bottom, but how?

Another concern for me is that I don't have a driving license. Is this something I should look into? I'm starting out in London - despite the public transport, will a car still be essential for working in property there?

If there's anyone on here who can tell me more about how they feel towards their job and offer some advice about what to expect and how I might get started, I'd really appreciate hearing from you.

What area do you mean? As an agent?

Sorry noddy, I think being a lettings negotiator for example sounds like it would be really interesting work. But I understand I might not 'get to' do that at the beginning.

I was offered a position as an estate agent (national company) with only retail sales / management experience (no degree). Turned it down though as basic salary wasn't at a level I was happy with, and I didn't want to rely on commission to afford to pay my bills. I was told driving license was essential however I'm not in London so couldn't tell you if its essential there.

They will be more interested in your sales skills than property experience. They can train you up in property.

You need to get a driving license, not essential for London but I think it could hold you back.

Is there any chance you could contact any estate agents to explore working as an intern for a while.

It might be worth investigating qualifications in real estate. Not necessary but will demonstrate that this is something you really want to do.

You say you currently work for yourself. Why do you want to give this up?

Hi I was an estate agent for years, you don't need any qualifications, personality is more important and as long as you have good communication and people skills I'm sure you can find a job.

I think you really will need to drive though, as even in london with transport etc, you need to drive or it would be impossible to get from one property to another quick enough.

The best thing to do is go on their websites and send your cv in even if they don't say they are recruiting. Also I would print your cv off and walk in estate agents you are interested in working in. If done that a few times and always got interviews that way. Good luck
