Moving abroad, how to find jobs.

Last year, We came back to the UK....we are dying to get away abroad again. Just wondering if there are any recruitment agencies which specialise in moves abroad...my husband is executive mgmt, formerly for fco, now executive mgmt in public sector...been looking on exc appointments. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

You could try it 2 ways: either you identify the country you want to go to and look for recruitment agencies/websites that specialise in the country; or you go for those specialising in the skills you have and have an open mind in where you might go. Do research on where those skills are in high demand, eg growing economies. FCO experience should stand him in good stead and also give him/you good ideas on where you might (not) like to live.

From what we can see, emerging markets seem to be all about construction, engineering and finance. Dh is arts degree, with sales and public sector exp although at board level.

We are not bothered about Europe tbh, fancy something further afield.

Also we move before without relocation deal and struggled, so not looking for anything crazy but would need hep with moving costs etc.....doubt there's much of that about unless you are looking at emerging economies.

Just hard to know where to start!

You certainly need to get used to the idea that no employer will shelter/support you to the extent that the FCO does, eg you'll need to do all your nightmarish bureaucracy yourselves ...

Oh yeah, not looking to be pampered, just want an adventure!

Does he keep an eye on vacancies in The Economist? There are usually interesting things in there. Or does he have a LinkedIn profile?

Put feelers out to everyone he knows. The most recent people I know have got overseas positions at this level the job spec. Has dropped into their in box. Some the most unlikely sources have been responsible.

British industry that was successful at the Olympics in various areas are working in lots of places.
Though quite a lot of these positions are unaccompanied.

lonecat, what do you mean by unaccomanied? Job specs from headhunters?

culturally and in terms of future moves, it eoukd be better for him to work in a multinational. Government and charity are harder as far as we can see although vietnam and peru seem to have quite a bit.

our kids are so young, we don't need to worry about schooling. Plus, Spanish was my elder sons first language, so we'd just stick him in a local school. We won't always have this flexibility, friends and grandparents will be much missed if we move after they start school.
