Job offer subject to pre-employment checks

I've just had an interview for a job I'm likely to get. They asked what my notice period was and when I could start. I'd rather wait until the pre-employment credit and criminal checks are done before I hand my notice in. What's the done thing?

Do you think that there is any reason that they would revoke their offer based on their checks? If not, then I don't think that there would be any issue with resigning.....however if you cannot actually do the work without for eg a valid CRB that could take some time?

We always get told we shouldn't give notice prior to checks. Partly in case of something showing , partly in case it takes a long time to come back and there's a gap because you can't start.

Does mean a long time between someone leaving & new person though,

I have had a bit of financial difficulty on some accounts which I'm in the process of settling. I had a repayment plan in place on these accounts when I started my current job and I passes the credit checks fine. Current employers credit checks look for IVAs and CCJs -public records basically - I don't have anything like that. New company is same type of company so would think their checks are similar. But I'm naturally cautious anyway. Another issue is I've just moved and my new address is not yet showing on all the credit reference agencies although I've written to companies to update. I'm paranoid!

Any other opinions please?
