Resources for coming up with a business name?

KellyKettle · 09/06/2012 14:57

I have plans to open an online store but I am struggling to come up with a business name.

DH has suggested a very boring descriptive name but its not memorable or interesting (e.g. if I was planning to sell shoes his suggestion is www.theshoeshop.co.uk - I'm not selling shoes btw).

How can I come up with a witty/memorable/catchy/emotive sort of name?

The rest of my business plan is going swimmingly but I'm struggling with this fundamental bit.

I wasn't sure about having tent in the title as we hadn't decided on whether or not we'd sell them straight away.

Do they have really interesting tents? I am going to click and look. See their name works then....

the really interesting tent company will make you anything you want in any colour, have a look at their face book page to see what people get up to in their yurts and tents.

I love the idea of coloured canvas. I will go and have a look at their fb page now...

See if someone has got there first: use a domain registrar (123-reg, UK2.net, GoDaddy) to see if the .co.uk and/or .com are registered, look up the name at Companies House and check if it is a Registered Trade Mark.

If you want people to find you online it is worth reading up about SEO. Using a domain name (even if it's not your business name) with at least one of the keywords you want to be found under will help your ranking. Try doing a search yourself with the kind of terms someone might use to look for your stock to see what I mean.
