I really need a mentor - where on earth can I find one?

I've been freelancing for years but have just set up a new, creative business. It's great but hard work (naturally) and I really want to find a mentor. I've looked on all the gov schemes but there don't seem to be any actual real people out there, just companies trying to fleece start-ups for advice.

Does anyone have any idea of where I might find a person willing to be my mentor?!

Since your in the creative business why not look at creative industry bodies. Not sure what creative you do but there are lots of associations that you could explore and many of these meet regularly. Tbh not many people mentor without a financial stake but if you network you could meet people that could help you

Do you mean someone within your field who can share their experience or someone outside your field who will help you set goals to grow and develop your business?

My local business link has a mentoring scheme and there are networking organisations who matchmake mentors and mentees. Try women unlimited and forward ladies for the latter.

As other have said, try "your" membership body/association they might have a scheme.

The mentors I have found, have been people I have met and asked (generally by email afterwards so not to put them on the spot) as I felt the fit was good. They were typically more senior than me, but not always in a related field.

If you don't know any, get out there networking. Fit is such an important part of a mentoring relationship, it can be easier if you have met before.

I have written mentor guidelines as part of my job previously, send me a pm with your email address if you want a copy to help you when you meet one.

Ps. I think most peope would be flattered to be asked, so don't feel shy in asking. The worse they can do is say no.
