Renumeration is commission only. Should I get a day rate for trade shows?

I work in sales on a commission only basis. In the past I did receive a small retainer, however, my contract was given to me this year without the retainer but with a small increase in the commission rate.

Each year there is a trade show that is very important for the industry. This year I negotiated a day rate for my attendance to help with my costs incurred for being away (childcare). It was a battle, however, it was granted and appreciated.

I have been told that next year this daily rate will not be paid and that my commissions should cover the costs.

I have a large issue in the fact that my earning potential has been significantly reduced due to limited stock availability. The past 6 months have been difficult as I have had cancelled orders (some very large) due to no stock being supplied to the UK.

I understand the importance of my attendance at the trade show and I am grateful that travel and accommodation is covered, but is it unreasonable for me to request the day rate as well?

Are you self employed? Surely you should be on minimum wage at least?

I am kind of self employed - the head office is based overseas and I am the UK sales rep with no minimal wage working part time.

I think there may be a status issue there as to whether you are SE or not but if we assume you are, then you are only entitled to what the contract specifies. It is up to you whether you agree to the terms of the contract I guess?

Sorry - not sure that is any help!

Apologies for lack of advice and general pedantry but it's REMUNERATION.

One of those words that most people get wrong. Wink

Gee thanks FreckledLeopard, I thought I got away with it!

TNSBB - I agree, who knows if I am actually SE or not. It is grey. I know I'll end up going, but I think I may ask for an agreed and confirmed wage expected from it and I'll base my figures around what commissions I earned fromt the show this year.

Thanks for your feedback everyone.
