Renumeration is commission only. Should I get a day rate for trade shows?

I work in sales on a commission only basis. In the past I did receive a small retainer, however, my contract was given to me this year without the retainer but with a small increase in the commission rate.

Each year there is a trade show that is very important for the industry. This year I negotiated a day rate for my attendance to help with my costs incurred for being away (childcare). It was a battle, however, it was granted and appreciated.

I have been told that next year this daily rate will not be paid and that my commissions should cover the costs.

I have a large issue in the fact that my earning potential has been significantly reduced due to limited stock availability. The past 6 months have been difficult as I have had cancelled orders (some very large) due to no stock being supplied to the UK.

I understand the importance of my attendance at the trade show and I am grateful that travel and accommodation is covered, but is it unreasonable for me to request the day rate as well?

If your contract doesn't state that you will be paid the day rate then I would think that you probably are not automatically entitled to it? Presumably you have childcare costs when you are working anyway so I guess your employer could argue that it's a cost you have to pay trade fair or no trade fair. Is it compulsory that you attend the trade fair?

It is not compulsory, but expected and it is important to see my customers. My childcare costs normally are very different as I work from home on a part time basis.

My attendance at the tradeshow would mean that I need to get a babysitter on top of what I already have.
