Why at interviews do they act like you've got the job and then reject you?

Was talking to dh and we've both had the experience where we've been to an interview and all seems to be going well, we are shown around; 'here's your desk here's the tea room' and so on.

You leave thinking Wow that went well. Only to find a letter on the mat a few days later with 'sorry but you were not succesful'.

I think it would be kinder not to show people around so much.

Well yes I suppose-treat everyone the same; but it would be better I think if they treated everybody formally and didn't give anything away.

Surely it's a waste of time to show everybody around the workplace and make chit chat when only one of them will ever got.

sometimes if it is an interview panel they have a break in the interview so they can discuss how it is going

we do this regularly as we have a list of set questions to recruit from, we do these, have a break (candidate shown round etc) while we discuss how the rest of the interview is going to be shaped based on their original answers, and then bring the candidates back in to complete the interview

You show people around because they need to know if they want to work there. I have withdrawn from an interview because I didn't like the place when I got there.
