Redundancy would you stay or go if offered this?

Just looking for people's views on what they would do in my situation. I could be in line for redundancy. Basically what am being offered is enhanced (x2 weeks) for 19 weeks so 38 weeks redundancy. This would pay our bills/foods for a year. I have been in this job for a v v long time and absolutely hate it. It is admin work. I do not like the people I work with and have been v unhappy in my job since going p/t 10 years ago. I have the opportunity of getting out now and getting this payout and trying to find another job within the year or if saved staying in a hateful job and if I do get another one the money will not be good so I will have nothing to leave for.

The scary part is I could v well be the person told to go anyway but I am worried in case I do not get another job. I have only ever had 1 my whole working life.

I think this looks like a pretty good deal and if you are so unhappy, it's worth it. If you're working admin and part time, I have no doubt you could find something else to tide you over, but with the comfort of knowing you've got a cushion to keep you safe in the short term.

Take it, and be happy you never have to go back!

Definitely take it
you've been miserable there for so long
life is too short

take it. go and enjoy your life and look for something else when you are ready. it will give you a real boost when you find other jobs want you too and you almost certainly will be happier. definitely take it. start looking soon and you have plenty of time to get something else.

Take it - there are plenty of jobs out there that make you unhappy, so you could always find another one!

However the chance to take some time and find something that makes you happy, or to retrain, is too good to pass up. Scary, when it's all you've ever done, but it's definitely worth it.

Good luck!

Take it, too good an opportunity to turn down, you will have time to have a break and rethink what you want to do.

Take it. Please. I,ve yet to meet anyone who regrets taking the redundancy paackage (when they have an option!) Could you retrain? Do OU?

lalalonglegs · 20/10/2010 21:40

Take the money and run (you will regret not taking it and I bet the package won't be so good next time). The first #30k of a redundancy is tax free, I think, which means it could last you even longer than a year, and really open your opportunities to do something different.

Take the money and run!

I did this 18 months ago after 14 years at the same company. I liked my job, just wanted a change. You will never have this opportunity or this money again.

Ignore the doom mongers who say there is no work out there, I got a professional qualification, applied for 2 jobs and got offered them both!

marriednotdead · 20/10/2010 22:00

Take the money.
I did after 14 years in a job that was no longer pleasurable. That was 2.5 years ago, no regrets at all.

Paid off all my debts, had a great holiday and then found a job I love.

Don't let lack of confidence stop you, it's a great opportunity.

Are you ME?!! Well, me 6 months ago, anyway. I took it, I left, and have not regretted it for one second. I took some time out, and I'm looking for jobs now. I'm confident that with all my admin skills I will find a job soon, and the best thing is I will never be stuck in a long term rut like I was before. Makes me shudder to think how unhappy I was for so long. GO FOR IT!
