Annual leave whilst on gardening leave

Can anyone who understands these things give me any advice?
I recently resigned from my job and am nearly half way through my notice period. I received a letter from HR today telling me that from next Friday I'll be on gardening leave (ie I won't be expected to come into work but will be paid for the remainder of my notice period). Lovely!
Except ... the company owes me 15 days holiday and I was expecting to be able to take this as cash in my final pay. The letter I received today says that I will be expected to take my annual leave whilst on gardening leave.
I could really do with the cash and am frustrated that I could have taken those 15 days earlier in the year and been in exactly the same position now.

So my question is whether the company can make me take my remaining annual leave whilst I'm on gardening leave or can I insist that I want the cash instead?

They can do this. There us no right to be paid in lieu of ann leave.

Fair enough. Thanks Hairy.
