Long article in Unherd by Julie....Bindel (🤞). Imo well worth a read. Draws together a lot of threads.

I don't know how many people read Unherd but whatever the number this should be as widely read as possible.

I know the DM trawls MN for content, 👋, perhaps if they don't steal it direct from Unherd this will draw their attention. With the Conversion therapy bill potentially adding diesel to this raging bin fire it need instead impetus to help to extinguish it.

I've read the posts on the longrunning BPS threadFlowers. I can only admire the strength of the people in captured organisations like that who do what they can, however small, to push back.

If I were Bindel I wouldn't be judging therapy, I'd be seeking it….

Why just if you were Bindel? Seek it anyway.

I see our friend has got bored of the other trans thread and is popping up on here already 🙄

Good piece by JB. Well said @GreyskySexRealistsky @Twoallbeepattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepickles please go out and get a hobby other than your only one which you admit is being a ‘debate pervert’🙄

Dunno Julie seems very sane to me, and a lot saner than some delusional bloke who claims changing his name and putting on a dress makes him a women don’t you think? At least her beliefs are rooted in science, sanity and reasonableness.

All over several threads now. Frenzied, frantic, hyper behaviour. Needs therapy urgently in order to unpack the desperate attention seeking.

Quite. Anyway back to the thread.

Therapy knows it can make money off this contagion. Ethical therapists have spoken up but largely seem to be considered bigots. Will read the article properly before commenting further.

Sorry for the derail @lcakethereforeIam.
Thanks for posting this. How utterly frightening that psychologists feel unable to speak out about what's happening.

I don't expect many posts on this thread. There's not much to discuss. Anyone sane should agree that ideologies stay out of therapy. I just think the article should be read. It'd be nice if the content could be addressed. If a poster thinks she's got something wrong, fine. Say what she's got wrong and why. In the parlance; play the ball not the man.

Fwiw I reported the first post for derailing. Don't like doing that and wouldn't have it it had anything at all to do with the subject and hadn't been the first post.

Quite agree. Julie Bindel’s article should be a sobering read even for the most captured. Thank you for posting it. I like the fact Julie has followed this topic and taken an interest in the ethics in this case of therapy.

It seems quite astonishing that anyone affirming does not take a long hard look at themselves. We have a long way to go but we must keep going to ensure children are not harmed further.

Another thought I have pondered - I am reading The TERF Diaries - where it came up. If ROGD escalated so rapidly in young women as it has over the past 10 years, why has the same not happened in women born in the previous century? Where are all the older women identifying as men?

Thanks for the thread. The article is good and worth reading.

The first thread I started on MN was me asking where all the middle aged trans udentifying were, women of my generation. They should be dead from suicide or, finally, able to come out of the closet. There should be thousands. The lack of curiosity about this apparent disparity is odd and itself worthy of study.

You do get posters saying if gi had been a thing when they were young they may have gone down that path. Now, they usually say, they're happy adult women with varying degrees of not conforming to stereotypes. My sister and I had male alter egos when we were 'playing out'. Fuck knows what might have happened to us if we'd been born in the 2000s and some well meaning teacher 'ally' had caught wind of us or if gi had been taught in our classrooms. My sister, I think, might have been vulnerable and I looked up to her.

I read Bad Therapy by Abigail Shirier, which was depressing as well. It's mainly focused on the US but as with most things it's been copycatted over here.
I also remember a thread on MN about an ET brought by a loony tune, who gave herself an unpronounceable name beginning with H, who was a CBT therapist.

The dearth of middle aged women going trans is rarely commented on, especially in TRA circles. It’s an interesting, and vey telling, imbalance. The few middle aged transmen I can think of did so when they were much younger, and have somewhat heretical opinions on the contemporary trans movement.

This was interesting from todays Inside Science on R4 about 18 minutes in; asking what if just doing your job leads to being ostracised;
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct978j

A Kiwi female psychologist talking about an article that she wrote questioning the appropriateness of wholesale rejection of the western model of therapy for Māori people. She ended up being cancelled including having the article pulled by the journal editors. Felt like strong parallels with gender ideology for therapists here.

It's the Omnicause init, can't question the sacred 'indigenous', not in NZ or Canada. NZ teachers Maori 'other ways of knowing' as an equal alternative to science, earthquakes are caused by one of their gods turning over in his sleep and scratching his arse, and it's as valid an explanation as plate tectonics.

100% this. As a former ‘tomboy’ I’m so glad it wasn’t around when I was a kid.
