Oxford City Council trans rights plan approved amid 'intimidation'

On October 5, the city council voted in favour of a motion which attempts to "ensure the rights, dignity and privacy of trans and non-binary residents of Oxford are supported to the maximum extent permitted by law" following an April 2025 Supreme Court judgement.

The ruling defined “sex” within the Equality Act as “biological sex” and “sex at birth” - since the ruling, the Equality and Human Rights Commission updated its guidance for enforcing the act.

The council has now passed a motion put forward by trans and non-binary councillors stating, “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary,” and calling for new rights legislation, amid descriptions of fear and abuse faced by residents and representatives.

The proposal aims to ensure access to council toilets and leisure facilities in line with self-identification.

"Oxford has the highest density of trans and non-binary people living anywhere outside of central London" and described concerns for self-expression in the city."

I thought Brighton claimed the Title for the most Idiotic Town outside London.
Given that GI is a load of made up academic bollocks, it's not surprising that quite a few of it's zombies live in a academic town.
They claim they want protection from the law whilst ignoring the law and undermining the very concept of law.

seanconneryseyebrow · Yesterday 07:23

But how can they do this without opening themselves up to litigation?

Igmum · Yesterday 07:39

Agree Sean, I think the council have just voted to defy the law. Not sure what other laws they will decide are optional (though suspect that anything else protecting women is likely to be for the chop).

Wishesandhorses · Yesterday 09:43

Wonder what their density is of women in the population, and why they don't feel any value for equality or care there?

But useful to see it demonstrated that the T political position is flat out 'no rights for women'.

Confusedjobseeker · Yesterday 10:18

What does non binary people are non binary even mean? Non binary is a self declaration but has no basis in law. Very much hoping someone Oxford based can legally challenge this disregard for the law.

“Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary people are non-binary,”

What about the small furry creatures from Alpha Centuri?

Dr Max NB - male who likes make up and jewellery teaches at Oxford Brooks. The write up says:

They draw on creative methods and queer theory to understand the role of law and society in constructing identities.

nicepotoftea · Yesterday 13:51

Well we will at least find out whether it is either a) legal or b) popular for a council to declare all its toilet provision mixed sex.

.... naturally they remain small, furry and from Alpha Centauri. 😀

Oxford City Council should vote Pi = 3. There's a historic precedent after all.

Could you please be less rude?

I suppose they saw Bristol and Cambridge getting the headlines for their right-on policies, chasing Brighton. More work for m'learned friends in the offing.

If anything, it's not sufficiently rude.

Councils, schools, civil servants, all willy-nilly defying the law.

It was always going to have to be pushed through the mangle to get to the point where it goes to court.

Presumably, like the nurses, there won't have to be that many cases for these people to wise up and think Jesus, that's a lot of money that we are inevitably going to have to cough up.

Trouble is, it's not their money. It's our money they're pissing up the wall. They don't have to make a profit. Civil servants don't even get voted out. They have no motive to wise up.

maximc · Yesterday 15:37

Oxford City Council doesn't have toilet provision other than in its workplaces, which aren't covered by the EHRC code as it must well know, & probably no changing rooms at all as services like leisure centres are all contracted out. There's nothing in the article about how or where this defiance of the law will be enforced.

Yes it is. The end would come a lot quicker if it was theirs.

Exactly. There should be some accountability.

I live in Oxford and I am quietly on the case. Have been for a few months.

First off, need to see the minutes of this reported meeting.

I hope that Oxford City Council also work to ensure "the rights, dignity and privacy of female residents of Oxford are supported to the maximum extent permitted by law in the delivery of services".

Perhaps they should consult Michael Foran, given that he works locally.

I thought this must have been written by the BBC's "gender" correspondent, but apparently is it their "political" correspondent.

So much for the BBC being politically neutral.

There are public toilets in Oxford city town hall, for a start https://www.oxford.gov.uk/directory-record/259/oxford-town-hall

There are also city council run leisure centres, I live near one which has a gym and showers and changing rooms.
