French strike after women asked to leave site for visiting delegation

Female staff told to make themselves scarce at a visit by a Hindu sect. Result is a strike and outrage. I wonder what the result would have been here, maybe management wouldn't have agreed to the terms but I'm not so sure.

The Eiffel Tower closed on Monday because of a strike over an alleged order for female staff to vacate the site during a visit by a Hindu ­delegation whose members wanted to avoid encountering women.

It is actually written into the law that they CANNOT preference one religion over another. Especially in buildings owned by the State.

It's shocking this happened in France which has such strict rules on keeping religion out of public life. But yes, Stella flipping Creasy not noticing/caring about how certain religions in the UK exclude/discriminate against women is an interesting contrast. At least the French are up in arms about it. Good for them, the council have ordered a full investigation, I wonder what the outcome will be and if anyone gets sacked for perpetrating this outrage act of misogyny.

Whoever approved such discriminatory nonsense doesn’t belong in management. The request should have been rejected outright.

I am all for religious tolerance and it’s an extraordinary building but I found it disconcerting to visit the Hindu temple in Neasden (school trip) and see female teachers (leading the trip) obliged to sit behind their young boy pupils.

I had no idea Hinduism promoted this sexist shit.

As unpleasant as that is, it is a little different because the party was in the temple's space, as it were. They chose to visit so they have to follow the rules. This Eiffell Tower caper is misogynistic men trying to bend the world to their views, which isn't on.

In the UK what they did would be an unlawful strike, because of lack of a strike ballot and the period of notice required (ten days??).

Though some other form of protest such as refusing to speak to them or a protest outside the venue could have happened.

This story is really surprising because Hindus normally don’t go in for this kind of nonsense but I think it might be a particularly extreme sect, which you can find in any religion. Anyway, good on the French - we probably would have rolled over and appeased them in this country.
