Telegraph article

The excellent Barbara Rich has been interviewed by the Telegraph about Maugham's little tantrum last week. She's her usual polite, measured self and looking great in her "polite white grandmother" clothes 😉
I expect he's recording another puce-faced, jabby-fingered rant for his insta fans, hopefully the other GLP directors have noticed his recent behaviour and will act appropriately.

The retired barrister drawing the ire of ‘pompous’ Left-wing lawyer Jolyon Maugham

While his Good Law Project attacks the media over Jason Arday’s death, Barbara Rich is once again proving to be a thorn in his side

This is off thread but a mention of Michael Gove reminded me that I saw but didn't read an article about a TV show with him, Nicola Sturgeon and some other has been politician. I did eat cheese yesterday evening, so I may have dreamt it.

Your nightmare is real.

Michael Gove and Nicola Sturgeon sitting next to each other at a table. Gove has his arms closed, Sturgeon is leaning towards him. They are looking at each other directly in the eye, stony-faced.

Sturgeon and Gove to team up for reality TV 'wargame'

The former first minister is to serve as deputy prime minister in a simulation of a Russian attack on the UK.

If Jon Ronson is still looking for people who have blown up their lives due to ‘culture wars’, Jolyon would be a good subject

Quite a few years ago I was on a long coach trip, and had downloaded one of Ronson's audiobooks. Just after it started, we entered a hilly, twisty part of the route and I started feeling really sick.

I can't really say whether it was the listening material or the journey wot did it, but now I permanently associate JR with nausea. Maybe I was just having a bit of physical clairvoyance?

Phew, it's on Sky, which I don't have mops brow #luckyescape

DontStopMe · 04/09/2026 16:20

I'm lucky enough not to have Sky as well. That picture was scary enough.

GLP blog
According to a survey commissioned by GLP 54% of UK adults agree with them that press regulation needs to be much tougher.
However 35% of respondents to their Deltapoll survey claimed to have heard of a nonexistent organisation called the UK Press Regulatory Board.
I hope Jolyon got mates rates for this low effort AI-produced crap, the 'survey' only contained 3 questions and one of them has hallucinated an entire regulatory authority 😁

Nothing instils confidence like a made-up regulatory body.

Igneococcus · 04/09/2026 19:55

Article in the Times about the Gove/Sturgeon/|Harman show. Sturgeon did a shit job in Scotland during peace, does anybody really think she could deal with a serious threat?

Sturgeon admits she's at war with JKR! She also said this

there were times when I sort of lost touch with what was reality

A character trait I think.

I'm not saying Gove was thinking of the SNP when he said this

Gove answers rhetorically. “It’s in the nature of despotic regimes that they’re always looking for an external enemy to unite opinion at home.

But I'm not not saying that.

I hope Jolyon will focus all of his time and effort lobbying this body vigorously.

TWETMIRF · 05/09/2026 09:32

Shout not. Such quality control involved in that survey

DontStopMe · 05/09/2026 09:55

Surely that must have been one of those quality control questions? I've done surveys where they asked things like
In the past week have you done any of the following

  • shopped for groceries
  • travelled to the moon
  • watched tv
  • had lunch with Vladimir Putin
  • supported the GLP
TWETMIRF · 05/09/2026 10:51

You know what? I had a lovely time last week at the shopping centre on the moon. I went with Putin, we had a spot of lunch, did some shopping and them watched some telly on the way back.

I didn't support GLP though, that's just crazy talk

"This new series claims to put the sharpest political minds to the test. Let's just hope they don't ask contestants to spot a giant motorhome parked a few feet away – or the former SNP leader could be heading for an early exit."
Tory Douglas Lumsden, the newly elected Aberdeen South MP

I'm not a Tory and I know nothing about this chap and what he stands for, but simply on the basis of this
I❤DOUGLAS LUMSDEN
😁

MarieDeGournay · 05/09/2026 12:14

I think Funny Dougie may have misunderstood the 'game' part of 'wargame', though - I don't think this is a gameshow where unpopular contestants are voted out by the public.
That's called parliamentary democracy😃

DrudgeJedd · 05/09/2026 17:12

Spectator article

This must be the reason for his Michael Goouóave rant, he commissioned Julie Burchill to write a snarky article about celebrity lawyers. She's certainly got the measure of JM😁

Jolyon Maugham and the rise and fall of the celebrity lawyer

Everything about this puffed-up popinjay Jolyon Maugham is absurd; even his name seems like something out of PG Wodehouse

Yes, much mocking and meme-ing of his weird pronunciation on X yesterday.

"The Showbiz Silks" - Joly can but dream. More of a polyester wannabe.

Beowulfa · 07/09/2026 11:19

I thoroughly enjoyed Burchill's piece. She's so right that he's like a minor character from a Jeeves & Wooster novel.
