... Participants described the environment as supportive, helping them feel more open, honest, and able to share their experiences without shame or stigma.

The research, authored by independent consultant Dr Briege Nugent, also highlighted that women’s pathways into substance misuse often differ from men’s, with many citing domestic abuse, sexual violence, or trauma as underlying factors.

The study involved interviews with women staying there, as well as staff members who had previously completed the programme and now support others through their own lived experience.

Women said the rehab’s structured and holistic approach—combining group work, therapy, daily routines, and family involvement—made them feel actively involved in their recovery. ...

Well yes. Good to see studies like this getting some publicity. Here’s hoping the funders are paying attention.

It's amazing how unsurprised I am by this result.

danglethedingle · 31/08/2026 15:12

Well that would be because they are safer without men. We all would be.

Gribouille · 31/08/2026 15:13

This is the sort of thing we didn't need a study about in the past because it was so obvious... 😒

Yes, like the very expensive study that found people suffering from head-colds functioned less well than they did when they were not suffering from head colds. It sort of stands to reason.

I suspect, though, that male patients in rehab would also feel safer not being with other male patients, and I can't see any way for that to be achieved.

Men might feel more at home with other men and find different pressures in being with women. Men’s sheds show that there is definitely a place for that, though the need isn’t the same as for women as the risks are different.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/08/2026 15:24

That's fair enough.

TurkishShepherd · 31/08/2026 15:25

Perhaps Breige could change her name to Brian and those in influence might listen, because women have been saying this for forever.

Men might feel more at home with other men and find different pressures in being with women.

Often the things that cause the initial trauma, very often CSA, are things that are more difficult to talk to to, and around, men. It is one of the issues with all things male MH that men are frequently the cause but rarely the cure.

But having worked in a couple of treatment places, male voices often drown out women. And one of the things that pops up frequently is replacing drugs with sex. And so straight people are 'safer' from that in treatment.

Yes, there's a known issue in AA called '13th Stepping' where senior members target vulnerable new members for sex... 🙄

IwantToRetire · 31/08/2026 18:02

I think it is really sad, bad whatever that there needs to be a study to validate the claim that women themselves have been making for generations.

And part of me thought we should keep a sisterly eye out for this project as no doubt it will now be the target of TRAs.

I was sort of surprised it had been able to operate as women only given other news stories from Scotland.

Yup. You stick people together with trauma, women are going to be targeted. People do have unhealthy recoveries as well as healthy ones.

Sounds logical indeed.
