GENEVA – A UN expert* today expressed concern about political opposition to updated guidance issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) following the April 2025 judgment by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom which clarified the meaning of sex under the Equality Act 2010.

"The public reaction to the EHRC's draft Code of Practice demonstrates how fragile the protection of women's rights remains, and how readily the rights of women and girls to safety, privacy and dignity are challenged," said Reem Alsalem, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences.

"The judgment of the Supreme Court clarified the law in April 2025. The EHRC's Code of Practice is intended to assist public authorities, employers and service providers in complying with the legal framework. It is disappointing to see political leaders opposing guidance which seeks to give practical effect to the law.”

The Special Rapporteur noted that single-sex spaces and services have long been recognised as an important safeguard for women and girls, particularly in contexts where privacy, dignity and protection from male violence are at stake. International human rights law recognises that States may adopt sex-based measures where they pursue a legitimate aim and are necessary to secure women's equal enjoyment of human rights.

Calling her an “expert” is misinformation. She’s far from an expert, expert hate preacher maybe but outside of her echo chamber the majority of people know she’s a nutter.

Thanks for the link, she's doing sterling work in showing the world what we've got to put up with in the UK when it comes to the political class, the scrapings of the bottom of the barrel.

They do say you get the government you deserve, and given the large number of citizens who could also be classified as the scrapings of the bottom of the barrel I guess we've brought it on ourselves.

RA is a highly educated and clearly an expert in her field! Wow men really hate women advocating and working hard against VAWG! Why?

Reem is one of my all-time heroes. With barely any staff, constant undermining by those with anti-woman agendas (not just the TRAs but the porn & prostitution lobby, and surrogacy agents, AND UN staff), frequently attacked for speaking truth to power, and half of the world to care about, she somehow manages to find time to consult on, analyse, and report on a range of issues. Her report on 'Custody, violence against women, and violence against children' laid bare the horrors of family courts & Hague courts worldwide. During the consultation,I sat in a room with her in London where she wept as mothers told stories about loss of custody, CSA, and coercive control. Her recent report on 'Violence Against Mothers' was extraordinarily comprehensive and unflinching. She has enormous courage and boundless empathy. We are truly lucky to have her.

Wondering if you'd apply similar language to that other nutter, Victor Madrigal-Borloz, who just as Reem now was until recently a Special Rapporteur for the UN (trans Reddit/Twitter with characteristic intellectual integrity tends to conflate his name and position to simply "the UN").

Agreed. Like many Muslims she is a raging antisemite. It's sad to find that she has feet of clay.
