To be fair, they have been careful in that article and not mentioned if was a man or woman. They use “worker”, “employee”, “50-year-old”.

But they could also say he is a transwoman. Put a space in it if it matters.

It will be interesting to see the actual charge. The usual charges when people have been nasty online are either related to malicious communications or to stirring up hatred against a minority group (this was what Lucy Connolly was prosecuted for).

But the tweets about Widdicombe don't fall easily into either of those categories. It's hard to charge someone with malicious communications when the target is dead.

So I do wonder if the charge is something to do with Herbert knowing in advance about the way she died. It would be extraordinary if true.

What did he say about the way AW died in advance? I've not heard about this.

But why aren’t BBC making clear he is a man? It’s not a woman making these comments, its another example of male aggression directed at a woman.

Because they are reporting on a police statement which does not make any reference to the sex of the suspect. They also don't mention the suspect's skin colour or nationality - because it's not in the police statement.

Did the police statement say he is a transwoman? How would the reporter even know? It's a piece of factual reportage, not investigative journalism.

There is chatter (on X) that Herbert/the polycule are being investigated more widely about various social media posts. I don’t know if this is true or whether I just want it to be true, as it should be true! Also a photo of what appears to be the print version of the Daily Record - the online non-subscription Daily Record is almost unreadable. Anyway, see if this posts: https://x.com/JNHanvey/status/2077721994515063233/photo/1

They'd previously posted pictures of guns and said some rather questionable things about bullets. Maybe this time the police will do something, but I'm not holding my breath.

I would wonder what else came to light when they looked into things. The tweets were revolting but we've all seen much worse.

I agree with PP. As abhorrent as his post was I sincerly hope he has not been arrested purely o that basis as it becomes a very slippery slop tha nAnn herself would have fought against.

So I can only surmise that they have looked into other posts that did incite hatred or violence

Maybe she might rethink that bearing in mind she is now actually murdered. If she were still alive to rethink it.

Yeah, I thought this was interesting wording from the police spokesperson:

Following further assessment, a 50-year-old has been arrested and charged in connections.

Further assessment of what? This tweet or posts more generally? Charged in 'connections' of what?

The fact that BBC reporting is suggesting that it's just about this tweet makes me think it isn't (which is where my level of trust in BBC is right now...).

PropertyD · Today 14:39

He is an irrelevant twat looking to make a name for himself. It was a vile thing to say. Imagine if someone had said this about one of his family.

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · Today 14:40

MimiGC · Today 13:19

The BBC report doesn’t say what the charge is.

very important point. The post I saw is offensive but free speech I would have thought.

This may be for other posts, maybe inciting actual violence.

RhannionKPSS · Today 14:40

It’s excellent news and about time those vile men are held accountable for their actions

RhannionKPSS · Today 14:43

I wonder if the police let him go the first time around and he, being an arrogant arse thought he was fine, and then the police found evidence of further vile behaviour?

RhannionKPSS · Today 14:44

As much as I like the thought that this vile man has been charged I don't believe that his disgusting tweet is a criminal matter.

Yes agree. He should lose his job at the university for bringing his employer into disrepute but I don't think police or courts should be involved

I think it depends what the charge is - if he has done something that would be a chargeable offence for anybody else, HH should be treated exactly the same.
Treated fairly, let justice take its course and all that - but I'm glad he's getting the message that his behaviour has consequences.
