New thread. You know the deal - women's pub, men to the Staunch Ally next door.

Some of us are currently on the trail of an international seed smuggling ring, just for background information.

Apparently I am intimidating.

I think it’s my self-possession and confidence.

And the stick I use to point at people’s mistakes.

I expect the claws, fangs & low rumbling growls help too.

I loved the ‘gypsy’ style skirts and dresses, followed by Laura Ashley in my late teens/early 20s ca 1980. But obviously mostly wore jeans etc very much the worse for wear with acid and alkali splashes acquired during undergrad chemistry labs. My uni sweatshirt was more hole than cloth at the front after 3 years.😂

Didn’t we all wear Laura Ashley in our 20s? Though mine were inthe 70s. I actually still have a Laura Ashley T shirt, though I bought it in the 90s.

EdithStourton · 08/06/2026 20:16

Any cannelloni left?

I'm usually quite easy-going, but when my tipping point is reached I get quite sctroppy. I had a minor rep at my last place of employment as being one of those who would Say Something if the situation got ridiculous, but I wasn't one of the scary ones.

I wore it in my teens and 20s. Not much of it, because I couldn't afford it. I don't think I've got any left in my wardrobe, though I do have one item of Next clothing from the mid-80s

Tonight’s useful Norwegian phrase from Duolingo: Vi trenger mer kake. We need more cake.

Or if it’s just you, Jeg trenger mer kake. I need more cake.

Batshit Latest

Off we went for the afternoon walk, to a place we visit now and again - it's a short drive.

  1. Batshit managed to sting herself on a nettle. She had just got her front end past it, but managed to brush a back leg against it, and looked round in shock. It wasn't that bad, though - she gave her leg a quick lick and carried on.
  1. Brains, who forgets nothing, thought, 'Ah, I know that backless bench! If I hop up there and look hopeful, Edith sometime gives me a treat!'

So up she hopped, and stood gazing at me as I approached the end - she was standing along the bench. Up jumped Batshit, eager to do whatever it was that Brains was doing, and Brains managed to move to the side just enough for there to be space for Batshit next to her.

Then Batshit, rather than going past Brains to turn around to face me where there was room, turned around right there with such energy that her arse hit Brains on the flank and knocked her off.

Brains landed neatly, and got back up, and they each got a treat.

Oh, and 3. The other day DH and I walked them together. DH turned round to see where Batshit had got to, and saw her shoulder down to the ground. He thought for a milli-second that she was rolling in something disgusting and then realised that no, she'd just slipped over on the mud. She'd forgotten, after weeks of no rain, that mud can be slippery.

Gah, noticed that my formatting got messed up too late to correct it!

Tonight’s useful Norwegian phrase from Duolingo: Vi trenger mer kake. We need more cake.

Or if it’s just you, Jeg trenger mer kake. I need more cake.

That's a phrase I can get behind.

Much more useful than my postillion being struck by lightning.

I might do some practice with Globetrotter. I bet she speaks fluent Norwegian.

The gerbils are on it. They've also been very careful with their outfits to make sure they are dressed befittingly for their female status.

Those gerbils do not look very comfortable.
I think they need to be in their joggers and sweatshirts. Or maybe just fur.

EmpressaurusKitty · 08/06/2026 21:20

Fur is beautiful, practical and comfortable.

MarieDeGournay · 08/06/2026 21:22

Dear Batshit!
But Brains is endearing herself more and more to me because of how she just gets back up on the bench having been knocked off by the over-exuberant Batshit, no recrimination, no 'Oh FFS, Batshit, be careful' in Canine, just hey-ho that's just the way Batshit is, ..now where's my treat please?Smile

Better? They still don't look terribly comfortable.

Bit better Maggers, for sure.
Maybe they feel that, dressed like that, they out to be out exercising. Perhaps pyjamas would be better. Maud has some nice ones!

Magpiecomplex · 08/06/2026 21:37

Oh yes, that's much better!

Brains is incredibly tolerant of her idiot sidekick. Possibly she knows how much Batshit loves her...

Though every now and again she makes it plain who is in charge.

I have NEVER worn Laura Ashley.

Clothing through the decades:

My childhood was hand me downs, handmade by mother or C&A.

My teens was Tesco jeans and t shirts, occasionally branched out and went to Topman.

My 20s were spent in jeans and t-shirt from BHS with the occasional Reebok t-shirt.

My 30s in jeans and Reebok t-shirts,Tommy Hilfiger t-shirts and an occasional Timberland t-shirt. BHS, Next and M&S for work.

My 40s was mainly in pyjamas from Sainsbury's. Jogging bottoms and a t-shirt from Sainsbury's if I'd got dressed. Jeans and a t-shirt from Sainsbury's if I had to leave the house.

My 50s continues the same way as my 40s.

I have NEVER done dressing up to go out and try to avoid any occasion where I am expected to wear something other than jeans and a tshirt.

Is that Gangrene near the back of the line?

👻

I think so, unless she dyes her fur to match every outfit.
Perhaps there’s a colour-of-the-month, so she’ll be unrecognisable in July.
