Woman's Hour (Joan Smith/Onjali Rauf)

Did anyone manage to listen to Woman's Hour this morning. I was really surprised to hear that the guests were going to include Joan Smith and Onjali Rauf...both of whom have (I believe) been targeted by transactivists in the past.

I only managed to hear about half before I had to switch off. I certainly heard Joan Smith saying something along the lines of 'These days men can put on a wig and we are expected to believe they are women'. Can anyone who listened all the way through tell me if Nuala did one of her usual apologies at the end? It's not appeared on BBC Sounds yet so I wouldn't be surprised to find that's being edited out!

Thanks for letting us know about the interview, I'd have missed it because I've given up on Women's Hour over the last few years. I'll pop onto BBC Sounds and have a listen later 👍

Joan and Onjali were on two separate pieces, Joan about the research on GenZ males opinions of women, and Onjali about her book being made a play. I just thought it notable that they’d booked two guests with one thing very much in common.

I saw this earlier and said an internal ooo…

need to listen

It’s Anita which is more surprising tbh

WarriorN · 06/03/2026 16:04

the intro sounds jolly terfy 😆

Joan does discuss “gender ideology” in relation to backwards step in how younger people are viewing sex and gender. About 25 mins in

WarriorN · 06/03/2026 16:21

She’s comparing many ideologies, eg full face covering through certain religions

WarriorN · 06/03/2026 16:25

Covering ‘gentle masculine’ ideas

I’ve listened back now and was really pleased to note that there was no repeat of the “some people may find this offensive” nonsense that we have previously seen from Woman’s Hour, and I didn’t feel that Anita was jumping in to interrupt Joan in the same way as I might have expected in the past.

I wondered if the editorial team may be less frightened than they once were to have sex realist contributors…the “awful bigots” who would once have been seen beyond the pale. If so, it’s a very positive step.

Anita? That is a surprise, she's not far behind Nuala.

It was a very refreshing episode actually

To have the term gender ideology appropriately thrown in and not resisted was quite a revelation
