Women just aren’t a “significant group”, apparently. And the decision to refuse funding only came after the inevitable prevaricating and spurious excuses 🙄

Women's Day event cancelled after funding rejected - because no men were invited

International Women's Day event in North Ayrshire cancelled - after the town's Common Good Fund refused a funding application.

Women can't even have one day of their own

Greyskybluesky · 04/03/2026 11:55

I pull this face 🙄every time I hear about IWD now. And it's a pity I feel like that.

I lived in a communist country for a while. It was a recognised day there. For women. Not just any old bod who happened to 'feel' like one.

It's being promoted on the BBC as I type. Seriously? The BBC doesn't know what a woman is.

Bagsintheboot · 04/03/2026 12:03

I think we have to be a bit careful here. They'd applied for funding from the Largs Common Good Fund which is a restricted set of funds with certain conditions on how the funds are used. In this case, one of the conditions being that the event must benefit all or a significant majority of the community.

While women of course make up a significant portion of the community(!), not all women there will be in attendance at the event. It can be argued that only attendees - and I don't know how many were planned - would benefit. The number attending is probably unlikely to constitute a significant portion of the community in all honesty.

It sounds from that article like the Common Good Fund trustees looked for every possible way to deny that funding, they really didn't want to hand the money over for that event.

A bit of a shame but someone has started a duplicate thread to this.

So info that would be better shared on one is not split.

(When I first saw both threads listed as new in fact I just assumed that of course more than one council / funder would be negating women.)

IwantToRetire · 04/03/2026 17:06

Well have just read the article in full and can not believe (even though it is Scotland) that a local council would be so stupid as to think an even that focused on rape crisis support services, should have men attending.

If Rape Crisis Scotland wasn't such a sell out they should make a statement.

Its grotesque.

This is exactly the type of local, focused even that IWD should be about.

Reaching out to women in the local community to share info.

(And some to have a good time.)

Apart from JKR is there anyone in Scotland who would make a statement about this.

They must be brain dead or so lost in MRA / TRA ideology they have no concept of how gross this make them look.

MoistVonL · 04/03/2026 17:09

I do think it's funny that the council criticised the amount spent on catering when it was the council's own catering arm.

OpheliaWitchoftheWoods · 04/03/2026 17:10

Half of their population. Half. All of whom will be mums, sisters, daughters, friends and wives of the other half. And they're not relevant?

IwantToRetire · 04/03/2026 17:58

Also, if it did attract 80 women given its theme, I think this would be a really good result.

Let's face if IWD isn't exactly a selling point, and to go to an event on an issue many women wouldn't feel able to be public about would be brilliant.

Talk about being back in the dark ages in terms of women's rights.

INeedAPensieve · 04/03/2026 19:01

Another day, another news article proving how shit my country is thanks to the shitty government and their shitty misogyny and the shitty councils that go along with it. We just don't matter. Sorry for all the swearing....

It appears that a business woman, Dr Marie Macklin has stepped in to fund the event.

Well normally I can get quite hot and bothered about how businesses seem to have taken over IWD.

But this is really great.

A business woman using her business to support other women.

What a star she is. Shame on the council though.

IwantToRetire · 05/03/2026 17:34

Does anyone know the name of the event?

Not that I am in Scotland but would like to share on facebook to show sisterhood is still alive!
