Sussex University fighting the fine

Apparently the fine is too much and the Office for Students shouldn't have levied such a huge amount. Hope they've got their house in order. No guarantees though www.thetimes.com/article/aa2807e6-ffec-4107-8b32-e115b3bb7bc8?shareToken=7eb40730d765ed9b7a84d40ff79c6f55

This case is being heard by Mrs Justice Lieven who recently dismissed the Sex Matters application for a judicial review of the ponds on Hampstead Heath by saying they should have applied to County Court first.

I’m not feeling encouraged by her being the judge.

I'll bet she was fantastically relieved to find an excuse to pass on that hot potato though.

I’d say the consequences of the University’s actions has been severe, particularly on their reputation as a bastion of free speech.

They don’t get it do they, it’s not the decision to fine them which has had consequences. It’s them and how they’ve acted!

If I worked there, facing redundancies due to financial pressures I’d be furious that they’re wasting more money.

What a joke! The problem is not the fine… it’s that the university is obviously bonkers! Who in their right mind would encourage their DC to pay them £9000 a year to absorb their counter factual garbage? Honestly they are completely detached from reality (and riddled with RAAC)

My ds is due to go to University this year and I havent heard anyone mention Sussex at all. They trashed their own reputation and have denied the chance of the majority of students to be taught by an articulate experienced academic in order to pander to a vocal and aggressive student group. Not an environment id feel my DS was safe in, or somewhere I'd think hed get value from.

She’s been involved in quite a few trans-related cases.

At least Kathleen Stock isn't being dragged through the mill thus time

Although she was forced to give up a good career, pension, and a job she’d worked really really hard for.

I was disappointed by the Ponds decision but not surprised. I have a few friends who've been involved in JR applications in other areas & getting knocked back for lack of an individual who can point to grounds for complaint specific to them isn't unusual. If memory serves, a few GLP cases have failed that way.

Thanks, I think, it sounds like the Uni is trying to render the regulator powerless which would allow the Uni's to be a power unto themselves. There's a lot more riding on this than just KS compensation, it could be the end of free speech on every campus if they win. 😱

weegielass · 06/02/2026 12:56

is there anywhere to follow the proceedings?
