Germany to classify date rape drugs as weapons in trials

Germany plans to treat the use of date rape drugs like the use of a weapon in prosecutions, as part of broader measures to ensure justice for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, said Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Friday.

"We classify date rape drugs, which are increasingly used as a widespread tool in crimes, as weapons. This creates the basis for significantly stricter prosecutions," he said.

"We are committed to clear consequences and consistent enforcement: Women should feel safe and be able to move freely everywhere," Dobrindt said at a press conference.

Nearly 54,000 women and girls were the victims of sexual offences in Germany in 2024 - an increase of 2.1% on the previous year - of which nearly 36% were victims of ‍rape and sexual assault.

Does it down grade rape that doesn’t use drugs? I suppose it helps with the ‘no signs of violent resistance’ issue.

(I suspect though that the commonest ‘date rape drug’ in practice is still ethanol - they probably don’t mean that)

I posted because I have this sense, though not that common, that there has been a shift in language and that violence against women is referred to as a war / conflict.

Which apart from actual crimes of male violence against women, then sort of recognises that sometimes women feel they are living in a conflict zone.

Meanwhile over here in Germany, news organisations reporting that VAWAG is increasing...

Well maybe it has made decision makers realise that so far they have done nothing to stop the war on women.

And this might be a first step.

Seeing it as a war.
