this money will go towards CCTV, alarms and fencing round mosques….

Meanwhile there are SO MANY other areas of the country that are desperate for a financial boost….Why is this one religion put on a pedestal? This particular religion that doesn’t treat women as equals.

Government announces £10million to increase ghettoisation and protect abusers... Remember, in UK there should only be British communities - integrate or leave. Identity politics and Ghettoes are bad, particularly this sort. https://t.co/eG24COsLpM

How is this putting Islam on a pedestal exactly? Hasn't the government recently invested extra money to protect synagogues?

There has been a significant rise in antisemitic and islamophobic crime recently. All communities deserve to be adequately protected.

GCAcademic · 23/10/2025 13:05

You don’t believe that people should have the freedom to practice their religion safely?

Pharazon · 23/10/2025 13:10

This is a crime prevention measure. Mosques, like synagogues, are frequently vandalised.

PinkFrogss · 23/10/2025 13:13

Surely crime prevention saves money in the long term? If someone can no longer commit a crime due to security measures you save on investigation and legal costs, and also the money you possibly would have spent having them in prison.

Besides the other more obvious benefits to this I.i allows people to practice their religion peacefully, no harm to wellbeing, etc. But I don’t think they’re doing it out of the kindness of their hearts either tbf and spending the money for the sake of it.

GreenSedan · 23/10/2025 13:13

£10 million sounds like a lot, but its a drop in the ocean.

Divided by the number of local authorities in the country, that's only about £30,000 per area. That'll pay for a few CCTV cameras and some other things. Not very much to get upset about.

Screamingabdabz · 23/10/2025 13:17

Meanwhile old churches, a legacy and a part of British heritage, are being allowed to moulder and be sold off. But let’s protect the burgeoning of ideologies that see women as second class citizens. Crime prevention bollocks.

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 23/10/2025 13:19

This isn't 'putting Muslims on a pedestal' for goodness sake. It is horrible to see this sort of anti-Muslim sentiment creeping into the Feminism section of MN. I guess it reflects the fact that right-wing disinformation currents have seized on a couple of women's rights/safety issues as one of the many arenas they are using to promote their divisive bullshit.

I'm also sick of alleged feminists attempting to force-team the gender-critical position with support for Israel's war in Gaza.

Churches are mouldering because they are not being used. They aren’t routinely being vandalised and their congregations attacked by people hostile to their faith.

It’s like there’s been an invasion of the Tommy Robinson fanclub on here.

I agree. I'm coming here less and less now. Yesterday I saw a 'those on the left aren't that bright' post. We get enough of those fascile divisive statements (from both sides) on AIBU.

Surely that complaint is one to direct at the Church of England that owns those old churches? If the churches were being routinely threatened, I might see your point, but they're not. Crime prevention is part of the government remit; management of buildings owned by the Church of England is not.

Bringemout · 23/10/2025 13:38

I would have thought synagogues are more of a priority tbh given recent events. Not saying mosques aren’t important. But Jews are the most likely to be on the receiving end of racist attacks in the UK.

happydappy2 · 23/10/2025 13:40

The timing is pretty tone deaf. The rape gang enquiry is collapsing, there is talk of bringing in new hate crime laws if you criticise Islam. It does seem to me that some sections of society are more protected than others. We are (or used to be) a Christian country, that was tolerant of other faiths. I personally would rather my taxes were spent on other things.

Must be frustrating for the OP, who was clearly looking for people to join her in ranting about Muslims, to be met with so many measured, common sense responses.

Don't worry, OP. There are lots of racists and islamophobes on MN. I'm sure they'll be along to express their not-so-righteous indignation very soon.

Synagogues have also received government funding to enhance security. Rightly so, because they are also at risk.

What has the grooming gang enquiry have to do with the rise in hate crimes against the Muslim community? I hope you’re not suggesting that an entire community be put on trial for the actions of a few and yes it is a few. OP if people like you put the pitchforks away for once then maybe we wouldn’t need the 10 million.

Insanityisnotastrategy · 23/10/2025 13:46

It's hardly any money in the grand scheme of things. If mosques are being vandalised then it's a sensible measure, although I'd rather it was self-funded.
@Screamingabdabz do you go to church? The reason churches are mouldering and being sold off is lack of attendance and support.

ninjahamster · 23/10/2025 13:48

Seems very wise to me. Protection is prevention surely.

Oh absolutely, the usual suspects that hang around to create chaos and division like hooligans in a park after everyone has left.

Synagogues are also being protected https://www.gov.uk/government/news/record-funding-to-protect-jewish-communities

Also just because some Muslim men are absolutely horrible people does that mean no Muslims deserve protection? Surely with that same measure you wouldn’t want to be protecting churches either.

Also can you link some evidence to your claim that there are talks (assuming these are official talks and not just tweets from randomers) that criticising Islam will fall under a new hate crime law?

Ironic you point out being tolerant towards other religions though.

Record funding to protect Jewish communities

Security around synagogues and Jewish schools will be ramped up thanks to record levels of funding to protect communities and help targeted groups feel safe, the Prime Minister has announced today.

Tomikka · 23/10/2025 13:50

I have no idea who Keith Jordan is, but they don't appear to understand the irony of security measures against hate crime vs their comment “ in UK there should only be British communities - integrate or leave”

They also appear to be unaware that the first British mosque was opened by William Henry Quillam 126 years ago. Quillam also built schools and orphanages

The second (first purpose built mosque) was the same year, built by a Hungarian jew, who also built schools

Both benefiting society as a whole, one British born, the other an immigrant who became British.

Tomikka · 23/10/2025 13:52

Turns out that the government funds (and advises) for the security of all faiths and places or worship

The timing seems quite sensible to me.

With all the news about the grooming gang enquiries in the media, there will be quite a few people who are sadly too stupid to distinguish between the perpetrators of that abuse and ordinary Muslims. So the risk of attacks on innocent Muslims will inevitably be heightened.

Maybe you should take it up with all the Clergy who sit in the House of Lords...

Out of interest, how regularly do you go to church?

tinytemper66 · 23/10/2025 14:00

I find that the more Islamophobic a person, the less they attend church.
