Meanwhile there are SO MANY other areas of the country that are desperate for a financial boost….Why is this one religion put on a pedestal? This particular religion that doesn’t treat women as equals.

I resent my money being laid to protect a building in which a religion is taught that says a man is allowed to hit his wife, a wife must obey a husband, a man can have 4 wives, women must only marry a muslim man, women must cover, women should "lower their gaze" when they pass a man.
All iof that is in the quran which I have read and most of those who support it have not ever bothered to do.

Because my feminism includes care for the wellbeing of all women. Around 3m of the women in this country are Muslim. Approximately 150k of them live in my city. I'm happy to support a relatively minor amount of money going out of the public purse if it means these women can go about their business, including exercising their right to worship, without having their hijabs pulled from their heads, being called racist slurs, spat upon and assaulted (all of which has happened to my friends, neighbours and colleagues) or facing the distress of having their sacred buildings defaced. The way Islam is interpreted and practised by some abusive and controlling males is not a reason to turn our backs on Muslim women.

The misogny of Islam is on proud display everywhere. You’ve only got to see a couple walking side by side in the summer to see who wears the shorts and who is covered from head to toe. The misogny in Christianity is very much within the power structures of the institutions themselves and most mainstream Christians reject it. Hence why we now have a female ABC.
