The Bluestocking, where the short days shorten and the oaks are brown

Welcome all, regulars and newcomers, to the Bluestocking Women's Pub, a place of refuge and inspiration and camaraderie and silliness, where all alcoholic drinks are non-intoxicating, cakes contain no gluten, sugar or calories, but still taste yummy, and the attentive staff are small but very professional rodents wearing snazzy little outfits.

Other roles - such as acting as foot stools, looking decorative in the garden, or just being impossibly cute when you need something impossibly cute to go awwww at - are filled by a team of miniature pigs, quokkas, wombats, etc etc.

If real life is difficult, you can bring your troubles to the Bluestocking and a comfy chair will be found for you at a roaring fire, a miniature pig will settle down happily to support your tired feet, and a gerbil will serve you promptly with a comforting drink - very large G&Ts or massive mugs of hot chocolate with extra cream and marshmallows are popular choices [don't forget: no calories in the BluestockingSmile].

That is adorable!

Very advanced for me.

I've got myself twisted in the magic loop and I'm trying to fix it. 😥

I have my loop on three needles and two cables, straight on the left, but twisted on the right. I feel sure that I could knit them in the right way and end up with it untwisted but I can't work it out.

The top half is on a needle and cable with an end cap. The bottom is on a cable with a needle at each end.

I was searching Amazon for barrier film, as per your suggestion, and a nurse saw it and said they had it! I haven't tried it yet. I will offer it to the surgeon as a solution.

Well, it looks impossible to me, but I don't do circular knitting. Have you tried the forum on Ravelry? They'd probably know.

Britinme · 20/10/2025 21:02

I hope you get the barrier film, Myrtle. I am also allergic to the sticky stuff on Elastoplast - brings me up in an itchy rash that takes days to go away. I am just about OK with the stuff that claims to be non-allergenic, but I guess anything that would be on for that length of time might cause a reaction.

It is also pouring with rain today, but I am not complaining because we've had a drought all summer and the trees really need it. Finally we seem to have hit peak colour around here. Sadly today was too grey and wet to take a decent photo, but I'll put a couple in that I took a couple of days ago very quickly from the car when it wasn't quite as good as it is now.

I may rip it out and start again. The pattern is three rows of purl then nine rows of knit, repeated, but purl is awkward in magic loop. I might do three rows of knit, then three purl and six knit and then repeat. Once it's straight all the way round for three rows then I can introduce fancy stitches.

Could we maybe each have our starry dress in a different colour?

Surely they have to be midnight blue or black?

Bagsy black with silver stars.

I could try, but the AI seems to reach a point where it refuses to change an image any more, & just serves up the same thing over & over.

... visits AI...

Ooh! Though I need to get my head fixed, & Swashy's now got a double eye patch!

It's missed me out. Waaaaah.

I reckon Edith has wedged the brolly handle in her cleavage.

I haven't the cleavage corkage to hold anything in place, much less a brolly in a gale.

I did a good impression of Dolly Parton when feeding the DC, but not since.

It missed me out too.

I don't think Swashy has a double eye-patch, I think it's pirated Ray-Bans.

That's because you're sooooo special that you had the first picture in a copied dress, & it was just you.

Here you go.

I love the pictures but they do look like the worst CAPTCHA test ever. Select all the images containing traffic lights.

If it's not possible to untangle, let me know and I'll rip it out and start again.

It does look twisted, Myrtle, sorry, and it won’t get better.

It’s very difficult to join up the first row of knitting in the round without getting a twist in it. A popular solution for beginners, and for me all the time, is to knit the first few rows flat and only then join it up to knit in the round. It’s much easier to see what’s happening and avoid getting a twist in your knitting that way.

You’ll have to sew up a small seam when you’re finished, but you can use the yarn tail from your cast on for that.

Damn.

My first three goes were so successful, too. This one is bigger.

Should be collected before 8.30am so I'll rip it now to start again when I've finally come round.

DeanElderberry · 21/10/2025 07:06

Very best wishes for today Myrtle.

Very classy.
And that library 😍
There will be a fireplace in there - Brains and Batshit will be sparko in front of it once it's lit!

EdithStourton · 21/10/2025 07:43

Amd everything crossed for you, Myrtle.

ChristmasStars · 21/10/2025 07:44

So glad you've had your yarn to keep you going. All the best for today Myrtle

Chersfrozenface · 21/10/2025 07:52

Couldn't sleep.

Got Copilot to make an image. It:s a bit scary, but hey...
