Library talk equates single sex spaces with racism

Terenure Library in Dublin will be hosting a talk by Dr Gillian Frank (despite his name he's a man, not trans identified) which appears to be equating single sex spaces for women with racism. Dr Frank is an Assistant Professor in the History of the Modern United States and teaches the MA level class on Gender Theory for the Program in Gender and Women's Studies at Trinity College Dublin.

His view that women having single sex spaces should be compared with racist segregation is not uncommon, it's one of the ways in which Professor Jo Phoenix was bullied. An employment tribunal found Open University accountable for direct discrimination and harassment which included her being called racist. https://sex-matters.org/case-briefings/jo-phoenix-v-the-open-university/

Ireland's public discussion on the issue of women's rights and how they conflict with the demands of trans activists has been abysmal. Gender critical people hardly ever get a chance to be heard here. That a library is platforming such a fatuous smear against us is pretty galling. I think Dr Frank should be free to make his stupid arguments. I think that women who wish to defend our rights should be given at least the opportunity to make a counterargument.

This is true. It’s an uncomfortable reality that those of us with GC views can find ourselves sharing some kind of Venn diagram with right-wing bigots, and certainly don’t want that association.

I have experience of the situations that took place in the Cork public libraries. They were totally wrong - pushing into libraries, aggressive to staff, shouting at children, using inappropriate language. No way would I align myself with them.

however, I’ve been at many a meeting (university) where behind closed doors there’s an eye roll about some ridiculous issue, but publicly, the Right Noises are made. I find it galling we can’t have some honesty.

"It’s an uncomfortable reality that those of us with GC views can find ourselves sharing some kind of Venn diagram with right-wing bigots"

There are a great many people who would suggest that there's a very simple explanation for this association.

As can vegetarians. So?

Yes, the great many people - a clear majority in polls in many countries - who support women-only sport, for example. In the US 45% of Democrat voters share this view with Republicans. It's amazing, it's almost as if people despite their political affiliation can agree that the sky when clear is blue.

Here's a write up of the talk-perfectlygoodwords.substack.com/p/dublins-difficult-women

Hi, someone told me about this thread, a good number of us attended, we have a recording of the full event and several of us are writing up the analysis such as one of the attendees here https://open.substack.com/pub/perfectlygoodwords/p/dublins-difficult-women?r=2nbicb&utm_medium=ios

a number of men were cursing and swearing at us for asking for single sex spaces in the q&a, one who was clutching his female partners hand clearly transitioning told me to fuck off at the end of the talk, he was enraged, frothing at the mouth. She kept her head down. I’ll share the genspect write up when it’s ready

Dublin's Difficult Women

Toilet Talk

Glad to hear women argue their case against the Tool.

How the fuck is it akin to toilets being segregated by race? Even then the men and women had separate toilets, 4 sets. It wasn't a case of all the white people in one toilet and black people in another.

How is keeping men of all colours out of women(of all colours)'s toilets similar? It literally makes no sense.

Thank you to all the 'difficult' women who attended the talk and held the speaker to account. Sometimes Ireland feels like a GC desert, so it's heartening to hear about this.

Sorry for what you went through, it's sounds gruesome but thanks for standing up for us all. Hopefully you'll take heart from the fact your not alone in this, women all over the globe are rooting for you and your fight. We here if you need us, we'll help in whatever little way we can.

@Sarahholmesireland thanks for going and reporting
I have a question-
did he actually clarify in what way the need or desire for SSS is analagous to segregation in the US? because I really don't get it !
surely no one was saying white women needed to have toilets that excluded black women because black women were disproportionally likely to be violent to white women?
I mean, I can't imagine what they were saying but it surely wasn't that?

IwantToRetire · 14/10/2025 18:56

Thanks to those who went for the feedback.

But just seems to be the same situation that prioritising women's rights is thought not to have the same importance as transwomen havinght the right to have their identity affirmed by being allowed to use women's toilets.

As this wasn't a lecture at a university but a public meeting the speaker should have been prepared to answer questions.

Not just keep stating his personal belief and anyone who challenges it is someone indulging in wrong think!

Sarahholmesireland · 14/10/2025 22:48

Good question we were all waiting on the big link and it never came, one of us even asked him to explain but he could not and was hostile. There is no link, the whole thing was ridiculous. He even had the picture of that creep that robbed the women’s luggage in his slideshow painted as a victim of trumps campaign. Honestly it was just nonsense.

madness
I wonder if he thought
nah, its just the public, I can bamboozle them with long words

Shortshriftandlethal · 15/10/2025 19:32

'Single sex' is only comparable with racism if you are hard of thinking. End of.
