Women-only homeless services

Recently the Simon Community in Northern Ireland announced a women-only hostel -
For some women, mixed-gender services work well. But for others, especially those recovering from abuse or trauma, they can feel intimidating or unsafe. That’s why services like our new Saintfield Road hub are so important - they give women the choice of a women-only space.

Today the BBC website has a report about homeless women in mixed-sex hostels which makes the same point.
Mixed-sex hostels 'terrifying' for homeless women

More examples of the tide turning, I think.

That is good news. In Ireland, a man claiming to be a woman was put in what is known as the ‘battered wives’ refuge in Rathmines upon his release from prison. He shared a room with a woman and he beat her to a pulp one night. You couldn’t make it up. I think they still accept men who claim to be women now.

I’ve just seen the beeb piece and was frankly amazed to see them using the word sex thoughout, and the importance of single sex services for women and their physical and psychological safety being so strongly highlighted. The point about how women just self exclude from services which are mixed sex and therefore unsafe was well made imo. @Elizabethandfour that’s horrific. That poor woman.

How they are going to define 'woman' in 'women-only' is a worry - but I'm hoping that overall it will do more good than harm, and the SC ruling will make it easier to use the biological definition of 'woman'.

If trans people want to organise themselves and campaign and fundraise for trans shelters, like women did for women's shelters, good luck to them. The same applies to men and men's shelters - everybody experiencing violence or abuse deserves support and safety.

Thanks MarieDG, this is looking like some sanity is returning.

Does anyone else ever wonder if Detroit (past poster) is doing ok now?
