Afghan women die after earthquake because male rescuers won't touch women

I just don't know what to say any more. Male rescue workers won't rescue women, and women aren't allowed to work as rescue workers. Women can just die trapped in rubble because misogyny.

Because of the misogyny inherent in the religion and culture of the region - let’s not forget that.

Oh get stuffed, any opportunity to sneak in a bit of racism, even if women are centred.

I wondered this when I saw the news coverage as there were no women in sight. Yet they expect the international community to help and (probably) make donations. Those poor women

yes it was horribly obvious that all the survivors were men and there were no women or children survivers seen.

Soon, there won't be any women left in Afghanistan and who will the men bully then?

inigomontoyahwillcox · 08/09/2025 14:39

So what happens in a medical emergency? I’m assuming that women are not allowed to be paramedics/EMTs, so women are just left to die if they have a stroke/heart attack/accident etc?

Misogyny does appear to exist across the region - it is not necessarily a result of the religion, however, but of the cultures already existing that took on the religion.

I suppose the assumption is other women will help them - but if they are not medically trained then that's not much use. Women are not allowed to train as midwives in Afghanistan - one of the professions traditionally done by women. It's nuts. These men seem to think it is okay for women and babies to die in obstructed labour, of pre-eclampsia etc. I suspect, actually, they have not a clue about childbirth and think that the women can handle it themselves as they always have - and that deaths are normal. Again, nuts.

There will always be more women, women have no choice over who they marry, whether they procreate and marriageable age. Female babies will continue to be born and a new generation of slaves with no human rights will exist to service the mens wants. It is a truly depressing and horrific situation.

Similarly in Saudi Arabia, 2002, 15 girls died and about 50 more were injured in a fire at their school, when religious police forced them back into the flames because they weren’t wearing the compulsory long cloak and veil.

Police also assaulted people trying to rescue the girls, and forced them away.

Smaller-scale but still one woman’s needless death: a Saudi university student died of a heart attack after teachers refused to let male paramedics help her.

It’s not a country but a culture.

Apparently in the earthquakes many women went back into collapsing buildings for their hijabs.

makes me so angry all these people protesting asylum seekers. If there were a legal route out, do you really think they’d be risking the small boats? Ffs. I actually saw someone saying they should just get visas and get a plane if they were legal. Yep, because I’m sure applying to the taliban for a visa won’t get women killed.

No, from what I read women were not allowed to join the rescue attempts.

I've only seen this thread and wouldn't know about this I suggest @IwantToRetire that you might want to consider stopping policing threads.

I agree, I haven’t seen the other thread either and think this is an issue which should be highlighted and discussed. If we are only allowed to post one thread on each topic then it will be a very small message board.

“Does appear to exist” , here’s a thought, if you open your ears and eyes you will find that misogyny not only exists it is thriving. Heard about the one where Afghan women aren’t allowed to speak outside the home?

The men already abuse, rape and bully young boys. Already discussed on MN.

Me too. Only say this thread otherwise I'd probably not have been aware of this. Thank you OP

MsGreying · 31/01/2026 13:33

A million threads wouldn't be too much. This is so awful.

How can we help?
