… to actual women.

There’s proper full on meltdowns going on:

The decision by Newnham College to bar trans people from applying for the Research Fellowship for outstanding female researchers early in their careers constitutes a blatantly discriminatory act of prejudice and intellectual cowardice.

FGEN Statement on Newnham College Transphobic Fellowship Announcement - Feminist Gender Equality Network

On behalf of our membership, the Feminist Gender Equality Network (FGEN) condemns Newnham College for advertising an explicitly trans-exclusionary Research Fellowship Award. The decision by Newnham College to bar trans people from applying for the Rese...

She was. Oh god, if I'd got a whiff of being involved in that sort of fun I'd have been right in there. Thank god social media/twitter etc didn't exist then.

Exactly. A landline in your room was a privilege, and all our organisation re Reclaim the Streets events was done by phone box like pound shop spies.

Social media would have been a minefield on many levels.

@murasaki Yeah, the article above saying he was publicly outed made me smile a little at the absurdity.

Interesting you say bekind was in play. My memory in the dept was that it just wasn't treated as anything remarkable at all, and nobody thought to treat him any differently to another lecturer and nobody referred to him as she rather than Dr or him. Although as an undergrad I probably saw very little.

I suppose these days you'd probably have documents, training and fellow students telling people how to behave and what the right views are. I wasn't aware of anything like that back then and good luck to anyone trying to tell that wonderful bunch of physics oddballs what to think.

Probably different to the environment in college. Wonder if in a similar position idiot teenage me would have joined the protests against Greer. Hmm, probably.

Were pronouns being demanded such a big thing then?

Or was he seen as just another eccentric academic?

@SabrinaThwaite Absolutely. Another mostly harmless eccentric in a place stuffed full with them. Pronoun demands were definitely were not a thing back then either.

Good.
Newnhamite here.

Could you write to them to back them up?

If bandwidth allows i will.

That’s nice. I did not go there myself, but would write if I had. It seems there are quite a few on this thread who went there. No doubt the college would welcome the feeling of support.

murasaki · 29/08/2025 12:40

I'll email, they send me enough after all!

I agree. (It is just bad timing, my DM is in hospital....)

WhereAreWeNow · 29/08/2025 13:51

This is good to see. I've been gently encouraging DD to apply to Newnham.
