Good afternoon

Thank you for your communication of 14 August 2025.

Anyone can visit our reading rooms and access this book as well as the 200 other titles that were not selected for display. A full list of those publications is available as part of the exhibition.

Libraries are vital places where people can access all kinds of publications for free, and form their own opinions.

We hope this addresses your concerns however, ....

  • To review the decision to not include the book 'The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht' in the Library's Dear Library exhibition.

The outcome you seek from our investigation are that the Library:

  • Includes the above book in the ‘Dear Library’ exhibition.

Is it true they decided to put it back in, I've been busy for a few days so I must have missed that?

Apparently it wasn't even true that you could access the book in their reading rooms

I think what this means is that the book is on the reject list and that should be good enough for us. The later bit is a summary of what they think we want. It's not an offer to actually do it.

I got a similar response so I am raising a Stage 2 complaint. It's not quite clear how to do that as there isn't a separate "Stage 2" submission box, so, I'm just going to email a reply to the message.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 20/08/2025 19:52

Yes, I've been composing my Stage 2, the response I've had is inadequate, it didn't address the main concern I complained about.

I just wanted to check I didn't miss something recently, because I haven't heard that they put it back in, and the response suggests they did.

Are they still accepting complaints about the fact hateful books shouldn't be in there at all?

ArabellaScott · 20/08/2025 20:30

Its not available, at least it wasn't when I checked earlier. Link is in the other thread.

Ooh libraries love those kind of complaints. Do get in touch and let them know how you feel. Perhaps suggest a list of books you'd like them to ban. Please also write to the Scottish government.

ArabellaScott · 20/08/2025 20:32

Maybe even suggest a wee burning, Chris?

No no not ban outright, just express my concerns this book shouldn't be in the exhibition at all.

Nothing to stop someone buying it and reading it anytime they want so no one is being "silenced" and there will no opportunity to use Jo's money to sue anyone.

SirChenjins · 20/08/2025 20:43

So ban them from the exhibition?

While you're at it, tell them to ban the Bible. It's rather hateful about women.

Is it on display at the exhibition?

I checked today and its not in the exhibition. I did double check with the staff because the exhibition presents the books in a random order.

The Bible IS on display as asked by@Heggettypeg

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/08/2025 11:26

Thanks to everyone for the info supplied, I've now sent sent in a request for my complaint to be advanced to Stage 2, because I don't think the reply addressed the substance of my complaint at all.

Have you read it?

It’s an interesting collection of personal testimony from a large number of individual women.

But you call it “hateful”. Women speaking about their experiences is “hateful”.

You come across as so childish/immature.

ArabellaScott · 24/08/2025 10:14

Women speaking about their experiences is “hateful”.

Some people demonstrably think this is true, without even needing to read the book to check. In fact, we could shorten it:

Women speaking is “hateful”.

Rules of Misogyny - For Women Scotland

It looks like the book is back.

Has anyone else had a reply for the National Library of Scotland
fromorbit · 04/09/2025 17:55

Thanks to all the amazing folks who pulled this off! Everyone who wrote a complaint played their part.

Apollo441 · 04/09/2025 18:11

Fantastic news.

thinkningaboutit · 04/09/2025 19:51

I hadn’t got around to reading the book but after this incident with the library I purchased 2 copies and the audible version. I wonder how many others did the same as me. It was a great read.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 04/09/2025 19:58

Fantastic news! With all the cards and formal complaints (plus the letter from one of their sponsors!) the NLS must have realised this wasn't going away.

And yes the book had a sudden uplift in sales.

SirChenjins · 04/09/2025 20:18

This is amazing news!! Well done to everyone who has fought so hard for this book to have its rightful place in the exhibition 💜🤍💚

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 05/09/2025 06:09

That's great news, I haven't yet had a reply to my Stage 2 complaint, I expect when I do it will be a good reply. 😁
