They either are fools or they're being played for fools. It does nothing to reassure the general public on the competence of our institutions. It's all chipping away at the social contract. How are people expected to respect the law when this nonsense isn't just indulged but pandered to.

Except, after reading the judge's summation this sounds exceptionally terrifying for the people he attacked, he had to be tasered to get him to stop. I don't understand why he wasn't charged with attempted murder.

But I've not been able to archive it to read it as it's behind a paywall. It was six years, it seems now that the sentence has been reduced. I don't know why or to what but less than six years.

While trying fruitlessly to find a readable report I came across a headline from an article in the Herald (May 2017) a tree surgeon with name Donald Sandilands sueing a farmer after suffering brain damage from a falling tree. I couldn't find the full article but it seems likely it's the same person. Possibly why the sentence was reduced?
