She just needs to get in a dig at the GC POV at any (even shoehorned) opportunity...
And this one is so wrong-headed that, unless she's deliberately and disingenuously misunderstanding the word 'femininity', it is plain stupid.

'These women are expressing their conservative gender politics by dressing up as ultra-femme women and, in doing so, deftly unpick the lie they often tell, which is that femininity is innate.'

Jesus. I can't decide if that's internalized misogyny, normal misogyny, or just plain old incoherent?

Deliberate misunderstanding to make her point, I'd say.

Culturally ignorant as well as misogynist. The expectations around personal presentation and grooming are intense among professional and political classes in the US, on both the left and right (Nancy Pelosi, Gretchen Whitmer?). Ultra-coiffed control of one’s appearance is expected, especially in DC (one of the reasons why Trump’s obesity, bad makeup and general slovenliness have long been the butt of jokes).

PriOn1 · 06/05/2025 10:33

I’m going with incoherent. I have no idea what point she was trying to make, but given that I haven’t worn make-up in years, I’m going to assume it has nothing to do with me.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/05/2025 10:41

Does that apply to Kamala Harris too 🤪 what an idiot she is.

IllustratedDictionaryOfTheDoldrums · 06/05/2025 11:01

Very illuminating, isn't it? So much focus on biological females and yet she still claims that the argument is that feminity is innate.
No, being femaleis innate to women. Not the same as feminity. How is this so hard to understand.

I know. Thick, or disingenuous...?

Why choose?

She’s capable of both.

lcakethereforeIam · 06/05/2025 11:24

I thought it was about transwomen at first.

The irony being that the description about 'the injectables, the lipstick, the dye, or indeed the surgery' can very much be applied to some TIMs.

These women are expressing their conservative gender politics by dressing up as ultra-femme women and, in doing so, deftly unpick the lie they often tell, which is that femininity is innate.

If it was, it would surely not require all this – the injectables, the lipstick, the dye, or indeed the surgery, which some might call gender-affirming care. It’s drag, with all the campery and inauthenticity that implies. And for that reason, I’m in.

I don’t think she necessarily knows what point she is making.

Logically, if these women believe femininity is innate, they are gender Conservative, not Gender critical. However she then says that if they were innately feminine there would be no need for injectables, lipstick etc.

She describes their look as drag because it is camp and inauthentic.

So what is she saying about men who believe their femininity is innate?

Her problem is using the word femininity rather than the word female.

It was such a baffling article. I have no idea what she was trying to say.

Justwrong68 · 06/05/2025 18:45

Is she American? I read ‘conservative’ very differently now

ArabellaScott · 06/05/2025 19:05

She should read The Female Eunuch.

ArabellaScott · 06/05/2025 19:11

She's describing womanface.

JellySaurus · 06/05/2025 19:16

Not sure who she's looking at. Sounds more like a description of many trans-IDed men.

No, a north Londoner I think.
