NHS Policy Audit - working party - thread #2

This is a thread about “keeping the receipts” on NHS Policies prior to the Supreme Court ruling on 16th April 2025.

Our working theory is that there were no single sex spaces for NHS Staff or Patients in the entire country before that date, having all been removed by stealth. We are aiming to prove this by auditing websites and policies for all the UK trusts and using the results to raise public awareness. As well as recording what has happened historically, the information will form a baseline so we can check which Trusts comply or defy the judgement in due course.

We are working around the country region by region. If you fancy getting involved in a bit of grassroots feminism then please do join in to help!? Each trust takes about an hour to research and you can upload online without giving any personal details away. Comment below and we can give you the link to an online survey - it changes for each region.

Thanks. I got a link to their Bronze accreditation but will also check this out. The Transgender policy referred to in Ermine's FOI isn't available anywhere and there is only one page I can find on same sex accommodation. I'll try a few searches based on gender, allies etc.

I had a Quick Look and can see that Ermine has chased up the overdue policy. I suspect that won’t be released post 16th April. So please do your best and just pop the links to the incomplete FOI. If it comes through we can add it in later

I haven’t yet looked, but I do feel that all of us auditors have a particular viewpoint that could be particularly useful to get across if it’s possible to do so.

That's interesting... Can you say which service? Is the trainer from an external organisation?
If you can bring yourself to step back in you could record the audio. It is legal to do so, as long as you're not going to broadcast it. I'd be interested to know the content that's being taught. It's a fairly niche subject for ambulance staff; I would've thought an e-learning module would suffice.

Delivering Same Sex accommodation in Mental Health and Learning Disability Services. The NHS Confederation 2010

Anyone come across a copy of this document yet? I've just seen it referenced in a Sexual Safety policy for a trust with a number of mental health inpatient facilities.

@umbel I haven’t got a copy, but it’s also referred to in the May 2009 CNO letter as something that will be produced specifically for mental health services.

There’s a couple of other relevant documents that I haven’t read but have seen referenced, which you might also want to have a look at if you can find them. They are ‘Mainstreaming Gender and Women’s mental health - implementation guidance’ from 2003. And one on ‘Safety, Dignity and Privacy’ in mixed sex accommodation in mental health inpatient units from 1999.
