All women shortlists to become female only

Trans women expected to be excluded from all-women candidate lists https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c62g7007kxko

One of the first crowd funders I donated to was to challenge all women shortlists being opened to men. It didn’t get anywhere and there were some allegations about improper use of funds but it got enough publicity that I still felt it was a good use of my money.

What I presume will happen is that all parties will just stop using them, as none currently have any running at present.

An official with blonde hair and a purple top attaches a sign to a polling station as voting begins in the by-election on 23 June 2022 in Wakefield, England.

Updated guidance is expected following last week's Supreme Court ruling that sex is biological.

This is fantastic.

Trans women are more than welcome to stand - as their sex just like everyone else.

About. FUCKING. TIME.

What a week.

Another wrong that has been righted.

Hurray! 🥳 I remember the fights about this early on too!

They need to exist for jobs like "women and equalities minister" or "VAWG" positions which are quite popular and sought after and can't reasonably be removed from government.

Something it’s taken 8 years to achieve. Great news.

Indeed, so there's not another Lily Madigan Women's Officer.

I would be interested to know what happened to Lily. So public about their legal action with school and transition, made such a fuss about being "unsafe" around some less pandering other Labour members, then disappeared. Seemed like too much for a teenager to carry really, however much Lily courted it.

RedToothBrush · 23/04/2025 23:05

What about trans people our rights are being removed?!

Transmen are given status to allow them to be on women's short lists and have better political representation.

No not that type of trans person.

Hoydenish · 23/04/2025 23:12

Sooooooo....would the BBC Wims of the Year list return to being for cunty wims? Asking for a friend.

zanahoria · 25/04/2025 09:44

Starmer could have announced that Labour's all women shortlists were to be single sex any time on the last few years.

I believe that this is a contentious issue at the current LibDem conference, with many women challenging the fact that trans-identifying or non-binary men are allowed to stand for positions reserved for women.

Westfacing · 21/09/2025 09:11

It seems ludicrous that it's now decided that all-women shortlists will be for... er women!
