I wonder if it will make a difference? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Coventry elected first female IOC president as Coe beaten https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/articles/cy4v91e3e1wo

I wish I had more faith that someone from the Zimbabwean Olympic Committee will be the leader that stamps out (I’d settle for reduces down) the endemic corruption within many of the Olympic movement’s governing bodies.

WarriorN · 20/03/2025 20:37

Yes I’m not feeling it either

I don’t think she will fully protect female sports. I think she will make some changes but leave the IOC guidelines to allow male people with DSDs to compete. And that she will not allow sex testing. And that she will continue to declare that it is up to the sports federations to sort it.

I hope that I am under estimating her and that she will go the whole way to protect female sport.

Seb Coe is vocally GC. I don't see this at being a step in the right direction. Not all women are allies

Is he? Knowing that men are not women isn't, in itself, GC.

I'm glad he's gone. Never could stand the man.

They said on the news that she's the pick of the previous guy, Bach, and she wants to make the Olympics "more inclusive." So it'll be more of the same.

I thought as much. Coe didn't get it BECAUSE he is a sex realist, I imagine.

He would have been much better than Coventry from the point of view of protecting the female category in sports. She doesn't even admit that the problems created by the IOC policy on eligibility could have been foreseen. She has been on the committee this whole time and said nothing. She only started talking about protecting women's sports after Coe pushed it to the top of the agenda.

WandaSiri · 21/03/2025 06:33

I just hope she doesn't turn into the Nicola Sturgeon of world sport.

Floisme · 21/03/2025 06:50

It could be my algorithms of course but Twitter champions for female sport appear unenthused.

Sharron Davies:
Sad to hear @sebcoe
was not elected as ioc president. I don’t think ioc are ready for change or transparency. Seb would have 100% put the athletes first before ioc members allowances & hospitality. Hopefully Kirsty will do as she said before the election & protect women’s sport & we also won’t have the shambles of Paris again where male DSD athletes were allowed to punch females in the face. Pure negligence Sadly for me Kirsty Coventry has been on the athletes commission for ten years & not spoken up before to protect female athletes coming behind her. But Fingers crossed’

Coe didn’t get it because he was the candidate most likely to go sniffing around the rampant corruption that, for the IOC, is just ‘the way things are done.’

I was always Team Ovett myself.

Not sure the new IOC president will be able to do that much. Unless having no person born male in women's sports is a condition of getting someone like Saudi Arabia to host the games, with all the issues that will bring.
