I've just read about Stonewall's recent update of many terms, including "transphobia".

Offhand, does anyone know which definition of "transphobia" Eden Palmer is using in that PhD? Will the analysis need to be updated?

What is going on re: Mumsnet vs Aston University's Institute of Forensic Linguistics?

I imagine it’s like starting a PhD In 1967 entitled “Is the Moon Made of Cheese?” And then Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin bring back some moon rock and leave you with years of pointless work.

We’ll never get to know until there’s a joint publication with Nicky. It’s all very hush hush. Even then, they may not define transphobia because you’re supposed to use key definitions analytically in a paper.

However, if it is defined, then they’re ought to be sufficient evidence to warrant the conclusion against the definition. It will be interesting to eventually find out what compromises evidence in this case. Occasionally I’ve seen unpleasant (largely sarcastic) remarks but IMO they have never comprised a majority view.

This is true, but Eden's research title presupposes the answer. So it's more like "What kind of cheese is the moon made of? Cheddar, stilton or camembert?"

NBC - I adore this analogy and RoyalCorgi's elaboration.

I genuinely wondered if, in the style of DrBlackbird's discussion, that there would need to be a clear, communicable statement of what "transphobia" is and therefore the foundation of Eden Palmer's analysis.

EP must be coming up to the midpoint of the PhD. There should be an opportunity for an interim analysis of whether this is meaningful work. I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of the eventual external examiners. Unless they all share the same ideology and have succumbed to Lifton's 8 criteria, why won't they want to know what the phenomenon is? EP may rapidly discover what it's like to fail to keep up with the fluidity in this area.
