Nigel Farage’s nephew has avoided a jail sentence after admitting upskirting a woman in a Co-op shop in south London.

At a hearing at Croydon magistrates’ court in south London, Joseph Farage, 31, admitted to placing a mobile phone “beneath clothing of another without consent” last July at the shop in Orpington near to where he lives.

Those convicted of the offence can be placed on the sex offenders register but the court record showed that Farage was not registered.

Instead, he was ordered to pay a £576 fine, £200 in compensation to the unnamed victim plus a £230 victim surcharge and £85 towards prosecution costs.

I mean, I’m not surprised that his sentence was lenient. Sadly this is no longer something that surprises anyone… doesn’t make it less wrong but not surprising.

Sentences are arbitrary, depends on the judge. Some dish out long sentences to make an example of someone, others are more lenient. There is often no rhyme or reason. I don't think the guy being Farage's nephew had anything to do with, if he hadn't been, it would have been unlikely to cause any publicity at all.

He's nasty. When I first read a bit about it I had imagined he was a teenager, a stupid schoolboy with an equally ridiculous group of friends egging each other one. However he is 31! No excuse at all.

Upskirting is just such a weird creepy thing to do. And for a 31 year old to do it…

It is a really weird thing to do, from my female perspective anyway. I'd actually like to talk to a man such as Farage about why he did/does it. Boys - I can take a guess, but a 31 year old? Or maybe he's a basement dweller who's stuck in a teen mindset.

I cannot imagine women doing this to men, even if men wore skirts. The older I get, the more I'm convinced that males & females are utterly different creatures, to the point that I'm astonished that a female can give birth to a male.

Yes. Pelicot was only caught because he was arrested for 'upskirting'.

Same as with Sarah Everard's killer being a flasher - any crimes of sexual paraphilia should be treated more seriously.

The driver behind it is the non-consensual aspect. That covers almost all paraphilias. They do seem very odd, but if you look at paraphilias as a whole, and they do often cluster in a person, the over arching motivation is non-consent.

Voyeurism, paedophilia, frotteurism, exhibitionism and flashing, etc.
