AI Thinks Men Can’t Clean Toilets…

Interesting (and unsurprising) article on AI image generators being unable to come up with a suitable image of a man cleaning a toilet. It goes to show that the data these AIs are being trained on is inherently biased and as more people become reliant on using them for information, the more warped reality becomes.

I’m not sure what we can do to combat it, other than keep applying pressure to government and AI companies to mitigate against the bias.

This thread may have caused a shift in the data bias with all the requests for men cleaning toilets 🤣

I tried a man dressed as a maid and he suddenly seems to be applying a little more enthusiasm to the task...

The one without glasses is my prompt with AI prompt enhancer turned off. The one with glasses is with it turned on (with it's AI generated interpretation...).

I asked copilot (now to be fair, it was several months ago, hopefully it has improved) for a picture of a trailblazer clearing the road for the team. I got rugged men with axes and shovels. When I asked for a female ones, I got skinny barbie types with long flowing locks, a brush/broom and a dustpan.

Fair nuff. He's good at it too, have you ever seen such a clean toilet, it looks brand new. Maybe men clean toilets when they are brand new, and then pass the baton on, so to speak...

Okay, so I thought I'd try moving the toilet into the middle of a field. Because I was getting Saw vibes from the men in bathrooms - presumably because for men, cleaning a toilet is the stuff of nightmares.

The first attempt (bottom row) the men forgot their cleaning products. The second attempt, they're using mini brooms...

Why is the AI so convinced that brushes should be yellow? (It specified "yellow" and "bright yellow" brushes in the 'improved prompts' people shared and most of the pictures seem to include yellow brushes.)

I have never seen a yellow toilet brush and very rarely any sort of broom or scrubbing brush. Is it getting confused with a sponge?

So that's why service station toilets are so gross - instead of actually cleaning them, the employee goes in and pees all over the floor!

I'm not buying that colouring book for Christmas.
