Morning! Is there a petition or a means of protest against this latest Iran draft? Anything else that my mates can do?

Thanks very much.

Do you mean Iraq?

However, it's 13 in Iran so still awful.

It's always worth writing to your MP to get the subject on their radar. There's a petition on Avaaz.

Twitter is a very good site to follow people who are talking about these issues. People dismiss it as a right wing hate site but tbh it's the place where you can find out what's happening. Just check out claims being made from their original sources.

I'll do a bit of digging to find out who is tweeting on women's rights in Iraq/Iran and also Afghanistan which is one of the most oppressive regimes in the world.

Iraq 'to pass law' allowing girls as young as nine to marry

Amendment set to end freedoms given to women under Law 188

Christ, I hadn't seen Iraq's news.

I do mean Iraq. Thanks.

Sharia is so sensible normally imo.

In Iran you can get married under 13 with the permission of your parents. Disgusting regime.

Thanks so much. Bit of a vomitfest isn’t it - wonder where the money comes into it. It’s only small girls, not boys too - quel surprise.

The alimony provision for adult women has gone too.

Unsurprisingly cos the expense of getting shot of wife 1 is what puts some starry-eyed bridegrooms off a bevy of playground cuties.

I have to admit I’ve got skin in this game - I worked, until very recently, with a woman who’d started life afresh in uk after her husband came back from a beach holiday with a small child he announced was 17.

And his second wife. He tried to make my mate move into their pool house, which she declined, and introduced the little girl
to his adult children and grandchildren as their new mother and granny.

My mate’s a lawyer, so the divorce - under national law - was expensive. The husband was livid and accused her of being a bad Muslim. Family women were Muslim-shamed for reducing contact.

Mate left the country. They couldn’t do anything about the little girl cos altho child rape is illegal she had a birth certificate saying she was 16.

Two years on, the husband came back from another boys’ holiday with a third wife. You can guess how old she looked.

That's horrible. I have so much admiration for women living under these deeply oppressive regimes who stand up against it. I don't think I could be that brave. I think we all feel frustrated that there doesn't seem to be much we can do to help.

It wasn’t in an oppressed country! She only got herself and her money out cos of what I think is American law, or one of its relations. Very diverse & desirable place to live.

The couple were pillars of the political community and deeply religious. She lost the lot except her faith, which at least she could practice in London.
