NUS Statement on Glasgow Rape Crisis Centre Exclusion of trans women

Thought this warranted a thread of its own. Written by Niall McGeechan He/Him, a Greens activist of course. Not sure where to begin on all that’s wrong with this ‘statement’ other than being rage inducing and shite statistics. Copied below:

We stand in solidarity with trans women across Glasgow and condemn the disaffiliation of Glasgow Rape Crisis from Rape Crisis Scotland and their move toward trans-exclusion. The move to exclude trans women from the service is dangerous and leaves trans women without key support needed within the city.

Statistics show that almost 1 in 2 trans people experience sexual assault, according to the US National Centre for transgender equality (the UK government doesn’t collect statistics on transgender victims of sexual violence), and at a time when healthcare, legal and community support for trans individuals is increasingly under attack these services are more important than ever.

According to NUS research, 68% of students have experienced some form of sexual harassment during their time at university, meaning that trans students are some of those most vulnerable in our community. We are working across Glasgow and with NUS to provide much needed resourcing and support in this space and will continue to update on this project.

Victim-survivors are already facing multiple challenges when using this service and Glasgow Rape Crisis statement has served to only further the confusion and distress of those who need support the most. We would ask that other services across Scotland do not follow suit and that the wider Rape Crisis Scotland organisation moves to provide these much-needed services for trans women and girls within Glasgow.

After constant attacks on the trans community, this is a further call to action for all students and student leaders across Glasgow to stand in solidarity with our trans brothers and sisters and prevent further harm to the trans community here in Glasgow.

Bollocks!!! Maybe if they’re so concerned these Green Party knobs could set up a support services across Scotland for people with a penis.

ChequerToRed · 07/11/2024 10:25

Well, I guess they could set up their own service rather than expect to piggyback off women’s hard work? Just think what they could achieve if all the effort they’ll expend on emotionally blackmailing women’s services was instead channelled into setting up a dedicated service for transwomen?

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 07/11/2024 10:29

He's really making himself look like a jerk isn't he, some men have no self awareness.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 07/11/2024 10:30

"According to NUS research, 68% of students have experienced some form of sexual harassment during their time at university, meaning that trans students are some of those most vulnerable in our community."

It doesn't mean that at all. Unless they've missed a word out, 68% is 'all students' and they have no comparative figure for trans ones. If they're comparing it with the US stats in the first para 'almost 1 in 2' is less than 68%. (And US figures for other crimes are substantially different from UK ones - so no reason to think these are any more applicable to Glasgow than, say, US gun crime figures).

Plasmodesmata · 07/11/2024 10:31

But they didn't say they were going to exclude trans women from the service. They said they would continue to support them, as they have been doing. They said they wouldn't employ trans women.

Glasgow rape centre breaks away from charity in row over gender

The centre in Glasgow said it only wanted to employ women, but this was "at odds" with Rape Crisis Scotland.

Hoardasurass · 07/11/2024 10:41

Ah but they said that tw can't be in the women's groups @Plasmodesmata so ofcourse that means tw can't be seen or given help because they couldn't possibly use the men's or trans group therapy could they 🤪

GreyRockinRock · 07/11/2024 10:42

In my area we have a local election. The Green candidate (or rep) knocked my door. I said no. They continued trying to shove their leaflet at me. They got the message when I told them what I thought of their anti women's safety bullshit.
I just see a bunch of nobody party jumping on a bandwagon in a desperate hope to be popular.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/11/2024 10:43

Yes, I imagine they can potentially provide services separate to the single sex ones that could be mixed or individually.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 07/11/2024 10:45

I've never felt the need to personally reply (I'm not on X) but I can see an email to Niall coming on as I'm so pissed off about this.

Never heard of him but he's blocked me on Twitter.

Does he not realise the optics of a male telling female rape survivors to bake room for other males?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/11/2024 11:04

Ask any of the million other "progressive" men who do it, including on this site.

lcakethereforeIam · 07/11/2024 11:11

I'm assuming Glasgow Rape Crisis offer services to women who claim a trans identity, as they would to any other woman. Perhaps he should spend his time telling men not to be so rapey.

if you googled 'define non sequitur', this should show up as an example🙄

Stay at school, Niall!

I am too. Totally enraged by this. They can fuck off and start up their own service. Leave women alone.

I posted on the other thread too the Glasgow thread I'm still raging. Ugh.

Well, quite. Do you think they meant to include the word "trans" before "students" because it makes no sense as it stands?

IwantToRetire · 07/11/2024 17:41

Article link already posted on existing thread about Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis Centre!

KazzyE · 07/11/2024 18:17

Trans need their own service, they are different to women and need a different type of service!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/11/2024 18:25

I think he's trying to say that all students are particularly vulnerable as a group, and he's already established with his bullshit statistic his claim that "trans" people are especially vulnerable in the population.

Precipice · 07/11/2024 18:44

The announcement by Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis that it was leaving Rape Crisis Scotland included this line: “We believe, and women have consistently told us, that single-sex services delivered by an all-female workforce are crucial to help them heal from sexual trauma. This approach remains our priority but is at odds with RCS’.”

Women (the service users) have consistently told GCRC that they require single-sex services. These are women who need to access the service because men have forced themselves on them, men have ignored what they wanted and treated them as objects for their own satisfaction, men have conveyed the message that what these women wanted and consented to was irrelevant.

Those arguing that these women cannot have single-sex services are repeating the same message. What they are communicating is that these women's consent and these women's needs are secondary and can/should be overridden. What a thing to stand for.

This. It's an item on the TRA agenda, that's all, to be ticked off to validate men and genderist women in their "cause". They give not one shit.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/11/2024 19:10

Sorry first two paragraphs meant to quote you @Precipice

ahjeez · 07/11/2024 19:29

It sounds unfortunately like there is a huge demand for a trans rape crisis centre. Surely, if those figures are as high as claimed, then there is a need to have a separate trans only centre that can accommodate? Plus, as I understand it, there will be mixed support sessions still, there just will be women only sessions which women who have used the service have repeatedly asked for?

OneBlackHeart · 07/11/2024 19:43

What is the %of natal women who have been sexually assaulted? That 1 in 2 stat for trans women said sexual assault not rape. I'd be surprised if natal women are sexually assaulted less that that to be honest, how many of us have had our bum pinched etc?

Also who is sexually assaulting trans women? I'm hesitant to say it as I can't link where I read it but think I've read somewhere that the purportators of these crimes are usually trans women? I may be wrong and getting mixed up with the murder stats where most common purpetrator of murder of a trans women was trans women

Come on! It looks good! Look, they've said why they are using US stats and everything. It's totally truthy!
