Most people on here are probably aware of Reem Alsalem’s concern about this, just unusual (and positive) for the tweet to come directly from UN Geneva and not her own account.

Well quite. Its pretty easy to spot the problem with bleating about VAWG then the next trumpeting about how anyone who says they're a woman is a woman blah de blah.
It's not like nobody's mentioned it before. I guess the UN were washing their hair that day or something...

I think you will find Reem Alsalem has known the difference and spoken up about it, leading to attempts by the queer network in the UK trying to get her censored (or it may even have been sacked).

This is the press release https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2024/09/special-rapporteur-decries-australias-federal-court-ruling-further-eroding which may be easer for some to share than the full statement in pdf format.

Good on Reem Alsalem! She' s really taking them by the horns. A few weeks ago, she wrote an 17 page missive to the Foreign Ministry of Germany, criticizing the upcoming Self ID law in detail.
The reply by the German Mission to the UN was wishy washy, as was to be expected...

Good on Reem Alsalem! She' s really taking them by the horns.

This could be a blue print to use in questioning funders, local and central government and ....

In her letter, Reem Alsalem goes into detail about criticisms that have been brought into the largely suppressed political debate for years by feminists and in independent feminist groups ands association.

She sees essential protective rights of women, girls and children in danger.

Among other things, she criticises the following points:

  1. The violation of the rights of girls and women to be free from discrimination and violence
  2. The risks of concrete violence against women, including further sexual and gender-based violence against them and the associated trauma
  3. The undermining of gender spaces for women
  4. The lack of a trauma-informed approach for women and girls who are victims/survivors of violence
  5. The lack of obligation to collect disaggregated data – including by gender
  6. The negative impact on the highest standards of mental and physical health of women and girls
  7. The lack of guarantees for the welfare of the child, especially for girls
  8. The risks to freedom of expression, freedom of religion and the prevention of violence due to the ban on disclosure

It requested information from the Federal Government on the following questions within 60 days:

  1. Please provide information on the safeguards your government has put in place to prevent human rights violations against women and children, including girls, that may result from the implementation of the Self-Determination Law.
  2. Please provide information on how your government in tends to create an up-to-date and reliable register of gender-based violence, containing disaggregated information on the perpetrator, the victim and the relationship between them.
  3. Please explain what measures your government is taking to prevent the re-victimisation of women and girls who are victims of sexual and gender-based crimes, which are primarily perpetrated by men.
  4. Please inform us about the measures taken to protect the well-being of children, including girls, and to ensure their right to physical and mental health and the right to freedom from violence and coercion of all kinds.
  5. Please inform us about the measures that guarantee freedom of expression in connection with the implementation of the ban on disclosure.

More good news! (I assume the references to gender are a translation from German?)

Delphin · 04/09/2024 18:06

In the Google Translation, read "sex" for every instance of "gender" :-) I am pretty sure the original letter from Alsalem used the correct noun. Alas, the German language only has one noun for sex AND gender.

Oh, I know. My derision was for the other UN bods who said she was making a mountain out of a molehill. Obviously wasn't clear.
