In her letter, Reem Alsalem goes into detail about criticisms that have been brought into the largely suppressed political debate for years by feminists and in independent feminist groups ands association.
She sees essential protective rights of women, girls and children in danger.
Among other things, she criticises the following points:
- The violation of the rights of girls and women to be free from discrimination and violence
- The risks of concrete violence against women, including further sexual and gender-based violence against them and the associated trauma
- The undermining of gender spaces for women
- The lack of a trauma-informed approach for women and girls who are victims/survivors of violence
- The lack of obligation to collect disaggregated data – including by gender
- The negative impact on the highest standards of mental and physical health of women and girls
- The lack of guarantees for the welfare of the child, especially for girls
- The risks to freedom of expression, freedom of religion and the prevention of violence due to the ban on disclosure
It requested information from the Federal Government on the following questions within 60 days:
- Please provide information on the safeguards your government has put in place to prevent human rights violations against women and children, including girls, that may result from the implementation of the Self-Determination Law.
- Please provide information on how your government in tends to create an up-to-date and reliable register of gender-based violence, containing disaggregated information on the perpetrator, the victim and the relationship between them.
- Please explain what measures your government is taking to prevent the re-victimisation of women and girls who are victims of sexual and gender-based crimes, which are primarily perpetrated by men.
- Please inform us about the measures taken to protect the well-being of children, including girls, and to ensure their right to physical and mental health and the right to freedom from violence and coercion of all kinds.
- Please inform us about the measures that guarantee freedom of expression in connection with the implementation of the ban on disclosure.
