... and at least it's not Harriet Harman (who I once admired, but we live and learn).

I don’t know much about him but refreshing that a white middle aged man is in charge of equalities. Hmm

teawamutu · 23/08/2024 16:53

He's not one of the pricks who led the Falkner witch hunt, is he?

Well, indeed. The perfect choice...

Please can those of you on twitter remember most of us aren't and therefore cant see what was said. As the tweet included alink to the official statement re this it wouldn't take long to add the link? Sad

John Kirkpatrick has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), effective immediately.

Prior to joining the EHRC as Deputy Chief Executive in October 2023, John was Investigations Delivery Director at the Trade Remedies Authority, responsible for investigating the need for post-Brexit import tariffs. He was previously a senior director at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), working on regulatory issues in education, transport and health, and leading the CMA’s horizon scanning and intelligence function.

Following an early career in the Department of Employment and Department for Education, he worked at the Competition Commission, the Audit Commission and at the consultant McKinsey & Company. He sits on the Quality Assurance Committee of the Office for Students.
John has served as the EHRC’s Interim Chief Executive since April 2024.

I frankly don't care if the appointee is male, female, black, white, young, old. At this stage all I require is that the appointee knows what a woman is.

His background is business not EDI. He's mentioned in this article as having authored this letter.

He may take a similar approach to Falkner but get less flak for it because he's a man.

It may be an okay appointment re gender woo at least.

To be honest I do not care if he is white and male as suggested upthread. No one benefits from virtue signalling hires. I do care if he is doing his job properly and this letter might indicate he is capable of understanding the EHRC's powers and remit, and applying the law, although he does seem to have fallen into the "legal sex" nonsense.

Imnobody4 · 23/08/2024 17:22

That reminds me - there's a consultation which ends Oct 3rd.

At least they've confirmed him in post. The real test is if they renew Kishwer Falkner's contract - I think it's November time.

Is that all?
good lord our standards have crashed because of all this.

I think there was a bit of irony in there? Or that at least a white middle aged man might be listened to?
I hope it wasn't a 'will somebody think of the poor downtrodden white aged men'? but I thought the emoji had a twinkle in its eye..sorry, their eyeGrin

Unfortunately in this role the appointee is required by the function of the organisation to promote the Equalities legislation of the UK.

And these say that there are 2 types of women. Biological women and legal women.

And this very lucky person has the wonderful job of trying to explain how this legal nonsense makes sense.

eg their guidance of "disriminatory" job ads which may make legal sense but leaves the rest of us thinking it is nonsense. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5147779-do-the-ehrc-guidelines-on-dsicriminatory-adverts-help-make-sse-job-adverts-clearer-and-even-if-they-do-how-does-that-help-service-users

Okay that's encouraging, I hope he keeps his eye on the nutters down the bay, so they don't manage to bring Self ID in by a backdoor, like buried in a ban on 'Conversion Therapy'.

Even if the new appointee were female (and non-white), I would not say it would have been a virtue-signalling appointment in and of itself; the female (and non-white) appointee could be just as competent, if not more so, and it would not be fair to surmise otherwise unless she is genuinely incompetent.

I also hope that Kirkpatrick does his job properly.

ReadWithScepticism · 24/08/2024 08:22

Apologies, I have googled but I'm still not sure whether this means he has replaced Faulkner as the head figure of the EHRC. Was she CEO, and has he replaced hwr?Or is her organisational title different? Which os the 'lead' figure if they are both there?
Agree that a man will get less pure hatred for stating reasonable truths reasonably, and in that sense the appointment is welcome. But I hate the thought that Faulkner may have left, because I associate it with the idea of her having been traumatised by this juggernaut of misogyny

simmertime · 24/08/2024 11:41

Falkner is the chair, this is the CEO. Falkner's term ends on December 1st, although it could of course be extended.
