NO I had absolutely no idea about it. Is it still open?

And honestly, I'm struggling with all these acronyms.

The NMC is a shit show. Every nurse and midwife knows this. Can be referred to them for anything - literally from a genuine mistake at work all the way to alleged murder.

Cases take YEARS to be investigated- it’s not unusual to be off work for years and then be told there is no case to answer. It is not unusual for people under investigation to take their own lives. It’s that awful.

They destroy lives and reputations with (in my experience as a Union steward) casual disregard for people’s lives and reputations.

I know this thread isn’t about all that but they are essentially a useless regulatory body. As midwives we have an independent group who will support midwives called to Fitness to Practice panels. We will come and literally sit next to you in the room so you’re not alone.

Its appalling that this is a necessary service.

NMC had a huge call, they were asking for applications for 80+ lay member positions. This was the recent posting (now closed). They're likely to repeat it or to allow people to register for the next one as they are reforming the tribunal service. (As per the piece about culture, the current system is truly dreadful.)

MPTS call for public/lay members finished recently but on the link I gave above allows people to register against the next call or to be contacted when new vacancies occur.

When I was about 15, I had suspected appendicitis and a male GP visited me at home. He gave me a 'breast exam' in my bedroom. No reason given and I didn't know better to object.

I had an internal at 18 I didnt need, because I didnt know better.
I wont repeat the comments he made, I still feel sick decades later thinking about him, it makes me shrink down just typing about it.

If anyone didn't apply this time round, the NMC calls for applicants regularly (possibly annually, but I'm not certain). The appointments are for a fixed term and so panel members are rotated.

They usually ask for professional and lay members each time, but in view of the current shit show, this years process is putting diversity as a priority.

When I was a teenager my mother's ex-boyfriend, who was a doctor, was accused of taking advantage of a patient. It wasn't rape per se, but that he had used his power and authority to convince a woman to have sex with him.
I was so disappointed that my mother supported him. Everybody else at the hospital dropped him like a bad habit, but she didn't. I had always thought him an egotistical asshole. I'm happy to say that he lost his position and left town in disgrace. I don't know if he lost his license to practice though.

I never thought I'd say this but I'd never seen a male medical professional and tbh even some of the women without bringing someone in with me anymore.

I had a bad experience with a doctor when I was a teenager. He wanted me to take my clothes off so he could read my heartbeat.

There are huge amounts of protectionism in medicine. It doesn't surprise me. Here
