Petty but I'm just watching whatever race is on right now - .marathon? I have watched a group of 5 immensely inspirational women athletes run their hearts out ... and not once did I wonder if they were men. Evety women of them clearly women, despite determined faces or strong muscled bodies.

Congratulations to Sifan Hassan, the other medallists and all the amazing women taking part 👏 ❤️ 🙌

Sifan Hassan also took the bronze medal in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. She is truly amazing. And as for Simone Biles - how can someone who is 4ft 8 jump 12 feet in the air?

I want to remember Paris 2024 for the athletes who have performed so well, and for the likes of the Turkish Assassin and for Snoop Dogg, and not for the stuff that has tarnished the reputation of the IOC.

The book about the IOC (Lords of the Rings) exposed the culture of impunity and immunity within which IOC officials operate back in 1992. Nothing has changed and it's unlikely it will.

And the athletes have been their remarkable and inspirational selves. It's always remarkable to see what people can achieve.

Absolutely this for me too.

The women have been phenomenal & have just loved watching the women's weightlifting earlier too (& all clearly women there also!)

In 1904 the record height in the men's pole vault was 12 feet. Pole vault! (And I bet the winner was taller than 4ft 8.)

I don't understand how the title of your post makes sense with the content of your OP. So there are strong 'Black' women, yes. But you go on to say not once did you question whether they were men... Why the need to specify Black women if you were going to then talk more generally about the sex of the women concerned? Surely it would be enough to just state 'strong women'?

Presumably because the argument advanced by many people supporting the boxers is "they always do this to women who aren't white".

KohlaParasaurus · 11/08/2024 15:15

The track races, and particularly the sprint distances and hurdles. Strong women with beautiful muscle definition and ferocious speed and obvious delight in "dressing up" to do their sport, with make-up and nails and hairstyles. And this year I haven't seen any cause for suspicion that anyone on any of the start lines wasn't a woman.

Exactly as the next poster said. There's often arguments, especially in relation to Caster Semenya, that there's a racist element of calling Black women men. That somehow we see Black women as men. I do not and I utterly reject both the racism and sexism. Black female athletes are exactly that - Black women. It's not anything near a genuine comparison.

I’d guess because it’s frequently argued (by different groups, clearly) both that:

• black women look “insufficiently feminine” or even actively masculine (right up to point of accusing women like Michelle Obama of being TW)

AND
• male athletes with DSDs - such as Caster Semenya - are being “accused of being male” due to their race & a failure to meet white beauty standards rather than because they are of the male sex

Clearly the first mob’s idiocy feeds into group 2, who aren’t helped by unclear reporting on the subject…
