Raquel Rosaria Sanchez writes for Spiked
"What’s the point of watching the women’s boxing at the Paris Olympics? As it stands, a male is likely to win gold in two out of the six women’s weight classes. "

""The IOC is incredibly strict about compliance with the rules in other areas. It has already disqualified Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat moments before her battle for gold after she weighed in a mere 100g over the established weight limit. Yet when it comes to sex eligibility, the IOC is considerably more lax."'

its unbelievable. I mean how dare they?

India’s Vinesh Phogat disqualified in Olympics, missed weight by 100 grams

Phogat had starved herself for a week, exercised and spent hours in the sauna to cut the extra kilos.

Poor Vinesh. How humiliating, how UnKind, for her to have one of her biological attributes checked by officials. Surely they should have taken her word for it, especially if someone had printed it for her on some kind of affidavit? Wouldn't that have been the most inclusive thing to do? Isn't that the way they ensure inclusivity in sport? How unfair to exclude her when she truly believed that she was the correct weight.

Well precisely!
Strict rules for thee, the woman
but not for me, the man.

Weigh-ins for weight categories should be done away with. Tyson Fury can box as a lightweight if he says he is a lightweight. Be kind, and no bullying or body shaming, please.. 😉

Yes and what's the performance difference of 100g extra weight vs the 162% higher punch power that adult male bodies have over women.

The IOC just likes punishing women be cause they are women. They clearly couldn't care less about inclusion of women. Only men.

Catsmere · 10/08/2024 22:20

I begin to think the IOC would really like to have the Olympics back to the good old days and be men only.

You would be correct. Misogyny runs through the IOC like a stick of rock. They don't see the point of women's sport because men are better at everything, so why would you want to watch something inferior?

This attitude is very familiar to fans of women's sport.
I always say 1) men and women are different and you cannot compare two different machines directly. I didn't shrug at Usain Bolt's victories because my cat can run faster.
And 2) The mental aspect, the competition, the (insert that fantastic quote about sport laying bare the character like the bones in a skeleton) of it, is what makes sport watchable. The speed/distance/height etc doesn't matter nearly as much.

Well done Dawn. Lots of supportive comments but India's not happy.

"You keep saying 'he', she's not identifying as 'he', so let's not use 'he."

Caller Dawn has a strong opinion on the Imane Khelif debate, telling @AliMirajUK that she finds it 'deeply offensive' to have to refer to the Algerian boxer as 'she'.

It makes no sense, as you say. What a travesty.

Poor Vinesh Phogat having to withdraw,

She was given some water to prevent dehydration before her bouts on Tuesday and subsequently her weight increased more than normal,” said Dinshaw Paudiwala, chief medical officer of the Indian delegation.

Nail on head, quite clearly this is the plan

PatatiPatatras · 10/08/2024 23:58

100g overweight? Don't check if the scale is well calibrated, don't let the contestant cut her hair. Immediate disqualification!

XY chromosomes detected? The lab is badly governed and the contestant is using a scrunchie. Nothing to see here!

Yeah, men are doing whatever men do.

Am beyond disgusted with Paris and the IOC. Barely watched these games as a result. I hope the IOC and sponsors suffer greatly from a backlash. The poor female athletes :(

100g? My weight fluctuates by a whole 2kg on average during my cycle. 100g could easily be hormone related- the female type that is!

Yes but with double the number of opportunities, one class for the top male athletes and another for the mediocre males who didn't quite make the grade.

Yes, that's the only reason they have a "women's" category now, as they've made crystal clear.

Of course they're probably getting their jollies seeing women not only defeated by men, but actually beaten by them as well.
