Deaths of gender questioning youth

I ended up down a Reddit rabbit hole reading about young people who have died that identify as trans.
I was absolutely shocked at the number of natal girls in this thread.
I don’t how how accurate this is but if the number of girls is so significantly higher than the number of boys- this is what we need to look into. Why are girls feeling like this?

Im no stranger to autistic girls- I have one that is a significant self harmer and previous ED… but this thread is tragic

I think there is an absolute mental health crisis affecting thousands of young people, and access to help, which needs to be almost instant, takes far too long. If only the new government would make this a priority. This is about teenage mental health in general, first and foremost, imo.

AzureAnt · 29/07/2024 12:19

Have any actual figures been made public?.
"Too many" is not actual stats

Keepingcosy · 29/07/2024 12:29

As pp said, this is a mental health crisis and dysphoria is the latest diagnosis for unhappy teenagers.

Sad it's affecting so many girls. I noticed a number of of my male friends self harmed decades ago. Social media has a lot to answer for I think.

Circumferences · 29/07/2024 12:36

Girls with mental health issues are latching onto "trans" as a desperate attempt to make sense of why they feel different/ self loathing/ depressed/ body conscious/ anxious etc. Being a teeenaged girl has never been harder, thanks to social media and the porn epidemic. It must be ten times harder if you're also an autistic girl.
There is a definitely a crisis.

I saw the thread a few days ago which presumably was written by the partner of DadTrans

Like you I was shocked at how many biological girls were listed, I think it was either 21 or 22 of the 24.

Reading the linked inquests and press reports shows how vulnerable the group were. Many had been under the care of CAMHS for years including in-patient care and had histories of things like child abuse, autism, ADHD, eating disorders and suicide attempts years before coming out as trans.

The conclusion I took from the thread is that gender ideology is truly evil targeting such vulnerable kids.

BathingOnPeriod · 29/07/2024 12:50

I can't see the thread as I'm not on X, but perhaps it is relevant that the suicide rate for autistic females is higher than for autistic males? (And higher for both than the general population.)

Ingenieur · 29/07/2024 12:51

The only official statistics I've seen were published by the Tavistock clinic following the broadcast of the drama "Butterflies".

https://www.thetimes.com/article/b0beaec2-cf38-11e8-b379-c268e57d77d4

Of the 5000 or so children seen by GIDS between 2016 and 2018 there was a rate of suicide attempts at around 1%, which they state is consistent with children with mental health issues, not unique to gender questioning children. Specifically, there were 3 suicides and four attempted suicides.

To quote GIDS from the article:

“It is not helpful to suggest that suicidality is an inevitable part of this condition . . . It would be very unusual for younger children referred to the service to make suicidal attempts."

“It is highly irresponsible for Mermaids to try to mobilise these tragedies for the purposes of their political agenda.”

So there isn't an increase in suicidality among this cohort, and it's damaging and unproductive to suggest there is.

Butterfly: Teen transgender drama ‘inflates suicide risk’

The NHS’s only gender clinic for children and teenagers has criticised a new ITV drama that shows a transgender 11-year-old trying to commit suicide as “not helpful,” saying it “would be very unusual” for a child of that age to attempt suicide. The mini...

Something someone said on here has stuck with me. “These teenagers aren’t vulnerable because they’re trans, they’re trans because they’re vulnerable”.

No, they’re being TOLD they’re trans and are a suicide risk because they’re vulnerable children being exploited by people who should know better.

VerasMacAndHat · 29/07/2024 13:03

I agree @BathingOnPeriod
The number of autistic girls who are trans identifying is significant. And the suicide rates of autistic girls and women is desperately worrying. A hidden factor obscured by the butterfly bullshit

Review says puberty blocker curb has not led to suicide rise (bbc.com)

This is about alleged rates of suicide linked specifically to the restricted use of puberty blockers, but I think it makes an important point about the need for great care and precision when quoting stats about young people and suicide:

Professor Louis Appleby was asked by Health Secretary Wes Streeting to examine the data following claims made by campaigners of a rise in suicide rates since puberty-blocking drugs were restricted at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust in 2020.
Prof Appleby's review concludes "the data do not support the claim", and he added the way the issue had been discussed on social media was "insensitive, distressing and dangerous".
There was also the risk that distressed adolescents hearing that message could be led to copy the behaviour warned about.
He also said the claims placed in the public domain about an "explosion" in suicides "do not meet basic standards for statistical evidence".

I can't see it either but luckily it has been published via Threadreader:

and archived: https://archive.ph/JafaX

It is grim reading but it would be useful to be able to put it into context, eg. the number and circumstances of all child deaths during the same period, particularly their sex, mental health diagnoses, history of childhood trauma and access to CAHMS.

The children, mostly girls, listed had such complex problems that it is perhaps impossible to know how significant it is that they were "gender questioning" or that they identified as trans.

Many were waiting for CAHMS assessment or support and/or GIDS. Some had been assessed by GIDS and were deemed unsuitable for referral to Endocrinology.

From tweet 79, Finn Hall who died on 18 Nov 2022, Bridget Phillipson MP has been tagged into tweets, with the exception of the last person listed, Emma Alraabeah, who died on 26 June 2024 (tweet 90).

The thread ends with:

"I don't know how this tallies with the Gov Report on Deaths of Trans youth which referenced (still unpublished) 'GIDS audit" data. The numbers don't add up. Multiple coroners found GIDS failed to provide timely care for Trans youth. I for one do not trust their data is accurate."

I doubt anyone trusts GIDS record keeping.

That thread was published on 25 July 2024.

Prof Louis Appleby, Govt Adviser on Suicide Prevention & Mental Health, published a thread on 27 July:

It’s a week since the Govt published my report on suicide in young people with gender dysphoria.

What did the reaction tell us about the necessary dialogue with the public on issues of evidence? 🧵

Interesting that DadTrans didn’t include a photo of nor much info about the NB AMAB teen who stabbed they/them’s mum to death shortly before their own death (due to medical negligence) in a secure mental health unit.

Charged with murder but died before the trial began.

Maybe it's because there are many more girls transitioning than boys?

I think the largest demograph is teenage girls (particularly same sex attracted and autistic girls) and middle aged men.
