Law is being shelved, but from what I can tell he says there was already legislation in place that covers it all?

Jo Johnson said the universities free speech law was just posturing and not needed because there are existing laws in place to provide the requisite safeguarding. It would have been informative for the discussion to have then gone on to discuss how universities might be encouraged to comply with the existing laws. Instead the discussion went onto funding with Johnson saying that the last thing universities needed right now was having to defend legal actions for not fulfilling their responsibilities.

Ah - the law would have punished universities for no platforming is on hold.

But this is ok as it was performative- due to come in next Thursday.

And would have caused a lot of law headaches, wasted time, and only benefited the lawyers.

Sorry cross post Naut.

It would have been informative for the discussion to have then gone on to discuss how universities might be encouraged to comply with the existing laws.

Yes it would have been. Because they're not doing their job.

I dont think most listener to WATO would have had any idea what JB was talking about.

They should have been able to do a report about when and if "no platforming" (eg racists) and people (specifically women) being stalked harrassed and silence but a very vocal but minority interest grouping at universities.

Labour to scrap Freedom of Speech Act | Mumsnet

Free Speech Union is threatening to bring Judicial Review proceedings. This does feel pretty undemocratic. Is this a sign of things to come? [[https...
