Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
OvaHere · 14/06/2024 00:12

They appear to be profoundly stupid. What exactly is the point of them?

RedToothBrush · 14/06/2024 00:17

They aren't exactly reflecting UK law are they? And how sex based rights exist in law. Nor legal judgments based on Equality Rights in the UK which says women's rights have been negatively impacted and are worthy of respect in a democratic society.

Maybe we should leave the UN. I mean, they aren't exactly good at doing anything much at all are they? Let's make a pointless resolution that everyone mentioned in the resolution just ignores anyway.

IwantToRetire · 14/06/2024 01:02

This isn't a surprise is it? We know they have been captured as has the Health section.

One of the things they do is (falsely) say that trans culture exists outside of western cultures, and it is right wing eurocentric groups who are trans critical. Whereas of course, long established gender challenging communities who exist in a number of countries have nothing in common with the queer inspired, anti woman rhetoric of western trans activism.

Its actualy amazing that they could write something so sloppy and apparently just picking up "facts" from social media. Quote:

Media and political campaigns have positioned the rights of LGBTIQ+ people as negotiable and debatable. Some try to frame the human rights of transgender people as being at odds with women’s rights, even asserting that trans women do not face gender-based discrimination or that they pose a threat to the rights, spaces, and safety of cisgender women.

While they vary by cultural context, these campaigns often portray the push for LGBTIQ+ people’s rights as merely a generational dispute, part of a so-called “culture war”, or in some cases an imperialist agenda.

Many such narratives position trans and non-binary gender identities as new or Western concepts, ignoring the rich history of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics across cultures and within the global South in particular.

Falsely portraying the rights of LGBTIQ+ people, and particularly of trans people, as competing with women’s rights only widens divisions in the broader gender equality movement. This has given anti-rights actors space to advance rollbacks on sexual and reproductive health and rights, comprehensive sexuality education, and other critical issues.

And in saying that they are saying they only support and work for the "right sort of women".

If you remember Reem Alsalem (VAW Rapporteur) was forced to right a statement made by some UN man about how gender critical women are transphobes.

LGBTIQ+ communities and the anti-rights pushback: 5 things to know | UN Women – Headquarters

State and non-state actors in many countries are attempting to roll back hard-won progress and further entrench stigma, endangering the rights and lives of LGBTIQ+ people. These movements use hateful propaganda and disinformation to target and attempt...

If anyone is on twitX and can be bothered - some already have - you can tell them they are talking BS.

"While they vary by cultural context, these campaigns often portray the push for LGBTIQ+ people’s rights as merely a generational dispute, part of a so-called “culture war”, or in some cases an imperialist agenda."
Well I'm in the strange position of never having heard or read a sex realist argument that the 21st century trans rights movement is part of an imperialist agenda, but now they've suggested it I think there's some truth to it.
Are we sure they're not stooges?

Runor · 14/06/2024 06:31

I’ll read it later, but isn’t it amazing that “transphobia” always brings a mention of the alphabet? It’s perfectly possible (and completely logical) to notice that trans privilege is eradicating women’s rights and children’s safeguarding; while also fighting discrimination on the grounds of sexuality

mcduffy · 14/06/2024 07:09

Share token. I always read their name as unwomen and it seems apt. WTF are they doing?!

UN Women says gender-critical activists are ‘anti-rights movement’

AstonUniRank · 14/06/2024 07:16

Aye, isn't Munroe Bergdorf their chosen best UK woman?

TWETMIRF · 14/06/2024 07:43

Yes I think he was chosen to be an unwoman

FrancescaContini · 14/06/2024 08:26

@mcduffy Yes, me too - “unwomen”. Seems appropriate, given their stance. “Imperialist agenda” FGS!

Fenlandia · 14/06/2024 10:53

I found this section a bit racist - DSDs AFAIK aren't specific to the global south or to certain cultures (the only thing I could recall is the Guevedoces of the Dominican Republic who have a higher prevalence than anywhere else of 5ard deficiency).

The rest of it is a bunch of toot as well, lumping in things like indigenous Canadian two spirit beliefs and Samoan fa'afafine with navel-gazing Westerners who claim a special non binary identity.

"Many such narratives position trans and non-binary gender identities as new or Western concepts, ignoring the rich history of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics across cultures and within the global South in particular."

Yes, cultural appropriation at its finest.

I came here to write that, me 3! 😂
Now I think it was a joke made by the OP, being a bit slow today, need coffee

WickedSerious · 14/06/2024 13:24

'Imperialist agenda' sounds a bit Star Wars.

IwantToRetire · 18/06/2024 00:01

bump for new thread context

Honestly, the type of people who write statements like this are lucky to live the most privileged of lives if they have literally no clue how badly they are undermining the rights and safety of women, children, and gay/lesbian people with their latest virtue signalling fad.

Enjoying the phrase "a bunch of toot"!

I'm guessing unwomen is mostly made up of aggressive bepenised women for them to spout such utter codswallop on the regular without anyone questioning these ideas.

WitchyWitcherson · 18/06/2024 14:12

According to the Unwomen website, this is the exec leadership team:

https://www.unwomen.org/en/about-us/directorate

I'd love to send each of those women an e-mail to query why they seem so hellbent on smearing and belittling concerned women! I'll add that to my to do list...
