Ooooo

  1. This is the Independent
  2. Looky. Wes Streeting Again
  3. Apparently no one cares about this? Thats why Labour just decided to go on the offensive with regards to single sex hospital provision ahead of an election... And the LDs managed to find someone willing to give an official statement for once.

NHS breaks mixed-sex wards rules 44,000 times in a year with patients at risk of humiliation and assault
Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said patients were left feeling humiliated and at risk, adding: ‘The use of mixed sex wards has gone through the roof under the Tories’
Official figures from NHS England show the government’s strict rules against doing so were broken nearly 5,000 times in February alone.
NHS leaders voiced concerns over the high number of breaches and warned that care that was "unthinkable a decade ago is at risk of becoming the new normal”.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said patients were left feeling humiliated and at risk, adding: “The use of mixed-sex wards has gone through the roof under the Tories.”

The government outlawed mixed wards in the NHS in 2010. Under the guidance, patients should not share wards overnight, share bathroom facilities or have to walk through areas occupied by patients of the opposite sex to get to the toilets.

Remind me, why were mixed sex wards outlawed in just 2010? What caused them to do these? What was the purpose?

Under the guidance, no mental health units should have mixed wards. However, earlier this year, The Independent revealed the practice is widespread, with more than 500 sexual assaults reported across almost half of the NHS mental health hospitals in England.

In one case, patient Alexis Quinn told how she was placed on a male-only ward due to bed shortages at the time. She was later sexually assaulted while in the corridor by a male patient.

Another former patient, Rivkah Grant, was sexually assaulted by a male mental health worker while at Barnet Hospital, and then further “traumatised” after she was moved to a mixed ward just days later.

Oh. So if you've been sexually assaulted being forcefully put in a mixed sex environment when you are vulnerable might be considered traumatising. Nice of you to catch up The Independent.

Mr Streeting said that the use of mixed-sex wards could be directly linked to government cuts: “Women were forced to spend the night on wards alongside male patients 44,000 times last year, 20 times as many as a decade ago.

“Patients often find this humiliating. Thanks to the investigative reporting of The Independent, we know that this is also leaving women particularly vulnerable and putting their safety at risk.

“The rising number of breaches is a direct result of Conservative cuts to hospital beds and their failure to train enough NHS staff.”

Earlier this year, following questions by The Independent, the Department for Health and Social Care said it planned to update guidance on mixed-sex accommodation – however, it has yet to publish this.

O Really? You don't say.

NHS guidance says patients should not share wards overnight with members of the opposite sex “except where appropriate”.

The only exemptions are critical care, end-of-life care, and observation wards where patients are only meant to be admitted for four hours and where treatment is delivered such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

The guidance also says that on the rare occasions that mixing does occur, every effort should be made to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Lynn Woolsey, UK deputy chief nurse at the Royal College of Nursing, said: “Sky-high mixed-sex ward breaches tell the story of an NHS bursting at the seams, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Patients are routinely being cared for in corridors and other inappropriate settings. Nursing staff describe instances of having to move non-essential equipment such as vending machines in order to place a bed with a patient. Patients deserve respect, privacy and dignity, and this is not it.”

Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Daisy Cooper said: “This is yet another broken promise from this government on the NHS. It shows the Conservative Party simply can’t be trusted with our NHS.”

Patients deserve respect, privacy and dignity when it suits our political agenda. When it doesn't its tough shit women.

Its fascinating to see the cognitive dissonance just evapourating.

So, Wes Streeting is happy to blame the Tories. But is labour going to put in their election manifesto that they will change this? Both in terms of more money for the NHS and single sex wards?

And what do Labour mean by "single sex"?

Will transwomen be accommodated in supposedly female wards? If they are, will the women on the ward be told? What if they object?

We really are stuck between a rock and a hard place politically. Labour will indeed use this info, just as the Conservatives will use Labour’s stupid position that some men are women in return. In the meantime, women end up being shafted either way.

Do people really doubt that Labour will put more money into the NHS than the Conservatives? I realise reform is probably required (perhaps back to a model that values nurses over managers, DEI and woke signaling) but I do believe Labour will put more into public spending. The Conservative’s major raison d'être for many years has been cutting public spending and giving the proceeds to private companies. If Labour don’t reverse it, we really are going to be in trouble.

Its really bloody depressing isn't it?

Presumably Streeting wouldn't be so quick to pick this up as a stick to beat the Tories with if Labour were going to reverse ferret all this? Cass, today's Rachel Meade win and all the other cases show only one direction of travel - facts, science, free speech and safeguarding children?

flippinhecknotagain · 29/04/2024 00:00

Mr Streeting said that the use of mixed-sex wards could be directly linked to government cuts

  • oh Wes! Is that strictly true!?? I'm no Tory voter but -

Have you forgotten (and please remember this was a Labour government) : hansard.parliament.uk/Lords/2005-03-15/debates/7b426bc7-9b7e-4077-90f5-fc495c91f32e/NhsHospitalsMixed-SexWards

Baroness Knight of Collingtree asked Her Majesty's Government:
@What steps they are taking to 'abolish mixed-sex wards in National Health Service hospitals'
Can he explain why a promise made in 1997 (Labour Government) and again in 2001 (Labour Government) to abolish all mixed-sex wards has still not been kept? The promise was made eight long years ago and those wards still exist.

Lord Warner's response:
I remind her and the House that the Conservative Party's policy on mixed-sex accommodation had exactly the same objectives as that of this Government. We have not changed the guidelines in any way from those that were issued on this subject before 1997 (my bold print)

And why did the Labour government not address this issue after the Conservative defeat in 1997?
The government outlawed mixed wards in the NHS in 2010
But Wes, was this not was enacted after Labour's defeat in the 2010 election?? ....... when the Labour government was replaced by the Conservative- Liberal Democrat coalition? ........

The first second points on this thread hit the nail on the head.
Labour considers transwomen as women so would therefore support them on a womens ward.
Single SEX ward means just that.

Waiting to see what they come up with

This is the famous Annex B.

Trans patients are accommodated in the ward of their choosing. This is not counted as a breach of the single-sex rules and only the trans patient gets a say - other patients on the ward are not asked or informed (and will be "corrected' if they object).

Chersfrozenface · 29/04/2024 06:53

If anyone is in Wes Streeting's constituency perhaps they could write to him and ask, in light of his comments on single sex wards, what Labour would do about Annex B to the guidelines Delivering same-sex accommodation.

ZeldaFighter · 29/04/2024 08:06

Well, maybe vote Labour, sort out 41,500 breaches of the policy then worry about the 500 that might involve transwomen.

I think GC feminism is massively important for women but i acknowledge that the NHS being run well is important for everyone. Sorry to get party political but the Tories are destroying the NHS, either through incompetence or deliberately.

It' s always "After the revolution, luv", isn't it?

No, Labour can damn well tell us what they would do about Annex B now.

Exactly, it's like signing a deal for a house, only to find they've left out the kitchen.

Absolutely we need answers before the vote. Labour so far aren’t showing any consideration for womens rights.
Although I think Kier may have suggested women don’t have penises now……or does he still think they do 😳

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2024 12:07

Oh looky.

Victoria Atkins today said the NHS must not 'eradicate women' and avoid using 'artificial language' in the name of inclusivity.

Addressing historic changes planned to the NHS Constitution, the Health Secretary insisted it was vital 'biological sex is respected'.

Ministers want to emphasise the importance of biological sex in health care, in what will be huge push away from the gender ideology that has gripped the health service in recent years.

Trans women will be banned from female-only wards under the planned changes. Women will also be able to request to only receive intimate care from a medic of the same sex under the changes.

Discussing the changes Ms Atkins said language the NHS uses should 'be clear and make sense to people', and not 'eradicate women'.

She told Times Radio: 'There will be listeners who are worried about the fact that they see articles in the paper about "chestfeeding" and language such as that.

Atkins says term 'woman' won't be eradicated to be inclusive

Her comments come after the Government announced proposed changes to the NHS Constitution for that emphasise the importance of biological sex in health care.

Are Labour saying anything similar.
