metro.co.uk/2023/09/28/we-accept-teenagers-taking-the-pill-but-not-puberty-blockers-why-19564554/amp/

Aside from the terrible writing in the style of a precocious ten year old, this might be one of the most ridiculous news articles I've ever read

I AM TIRED OF THIS PERFORMATIVE STUPIDITY.

☝this

Also, the pill is not without its downsides.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 18/04/2024 16:09

Ugla Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir, otherwise known as "Owl Fisher", is a non binary woman who was registered male at birth and one of the youngest people to have undergone gender affirming surgery in Iceland.

They have never taken puberty blockers or the pill.

They are a journalist, filmmaker, author and activist with a master's degree in Gender Studies, and they currently work for Gendered Intelligence.

They do not appear to have any medical qualifications.

LizzieSiddal · 18/04/2024 16:09

What?!?!?!?! They are showing themselves to be extremely stupid. However just you wait, some idiots will lap it up and use it in their next “argument” for blockers.

Somebody hasn’t read the Cass Review….

That article is from last September, in fairness.

But I doubt they will have changed their opinion.

when I took the pill, every incarnation gave me horrible side effects and I had to stop. It varies from woman to woman. But there was no lifetime limit because the risk from pregnancy is so high.

when I took my 3 lupron doses as an adult to try to stop rupturing ovarian cysts with a history of sepsis, I was told I was using up half of my LIFETIME allocation of 6 because the drug was so damaging to my body.

I am no fan of how blasé we are about recommending women take the pill, but to call birth control and puberty blockers comparable is ridiculously naive.

Cauliflowery · 18/04/2024 16:23

I actually think the fact that society has accepted the side effects of the contraceptive pill for so long (yes I know it was revolutionary and we're lucky etc) is a minor medical scandal in itself.

Loss of libido? Irrelevant because sex is something done to women, by men. Depressed? Whack an antidepressant in. Weight gain? Have you tried dieting? Please stop bothering the medical establishment because they have far more important things to work on than women's issues.

This is all irrelevant to Owl of course. Owl being one of those superior women.

I'd go further and say that it's offensively dishonest.

That sounds absolutely horrendous. I hope you're ok now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/04/2024 16:33

Absolutely agree re the pill. I was prescribed it in the 1990s for no other reason than bad PMT; unfortunately what nobody told me was that my bad but predictable PMT would be replaced by unpredictable severe mood swings which led to me making a serious suicide attempt which luckily I survived.
It was only decades later that I found out I should never have been prescribed that type of pill anyway because as a migraine sufferer it was too much of a stroke risk!
(It also put me off sex and destroyed my relationship but that probably did me a favour tbh because if sex is a dealbreaker for a bloke he’s probably not someone you want to be with long term.)
The casualness with which these things are dished out is extraordinary.

I AM TIRED OF THIS PERFORMATIVE STUPIDITY.

I want to put this on a tee shirt.
And a tea towel.
And a light projection onto the houses of parliament.
And a fucking flag.
And tattoo it on to a few people's heads.

Findwen · 18/04/2024 16:37

If it is as tame as they are trying to suggest - then why don't the Metro editing staff put their money where their mouth is ?

All the male staff can take estrogen and all the female staff can take testosterone right ? Just for say... a year and a day ! Won't be a problem right ?

If you are going to complain, you need to be aware that it's an old article and not something published in the wake of Cass.

"We accept teenagers taking paracetamol but not cocaine- why?"

TomeTome · 18/04/2024 19:00

Most women on the fertility boards will have taken the pill and gonadotropins. I can assure you they are very very different.

WarriorN · 18/04/2024 19:10

Agree the pill is no walk in the park.

Many friends have said some made them loopy and I think the combined pill triggered my hypothyroidism. I know that Isaac the young male detransitioner who popped up a couple of years ago blamed the cross sex hormones for his AI hypothyroidism.

Still Tish on Twitter has been talking about the links between cross sex hormones and MS, which she has. So is understandably very concerned about her son who has started them.

PB STIOL DONT COMPARE FFS!
